What could cause a grinding sound when I brake, that is NOT the brakes. Please don't bother suggesting or asking about the brakes. I have had 3 mechanics look at them, all 4 brakes replaced, rotors and all.

The sound seems to be coming from the back.

How sure are you that its NOT the brakes seeing as you're relying on 3 "mechanics" word.

None of us on the forum have the advantage of listening to it like the 3 mechanics have so not really in a position to accurately guess what the problem is, but got to question the competence of those mechanics that have had the opportunity to drive it, listen to it and inspect it.

You probably have a metallic harmonic vibration when you brake, caused by weight redistribution.

I'd look for a heat shield or exhaust part too close to the suspension or body that may be rubbing in this circumstance. This happened to my wife's 2017 Sportage for example.

Good luck. In her case, the exhaust system was moving/flexing slightly under braking, and it was rubbing against a part of the unibody. So they reset it, tightened it up, and all is well.
