Apologies if this has been covered before but I thought I'd share what I've learned, in case it helps anybody, and ask for help on something related.
First: after a cold snap, the instrument cluster on my base 2013 Soul was dead and the auto shifter was stuck in park. I took it to a local shop close to my house--it's a national chain. After several days, the guy at the shop told me it would cost $2000 and take two weeks to replace the instrument cluster. And after a few questions, he told me he couldn't guarantee the fix, he said they might need to do more work later. (And the pirate charged me $362 for that useless information!)
So I did a lot of looking on the web and got some good info. A couple of posts mentioned cold weather at the same time as the problem developed. So yesterday I started my Soul and let it warm up thoroughly--heater on full until it was uncomfortably warm inside. After 20 minutes of this, the instrument cluster came back to life and the shift lever began working again. It's worked today as well, though it hasn't been as cold.
So I don't know what the real problem is, but if it is mediated by cold weather, I'm thinking it may be corroded connections, or something else that may be relatively fixable. (Side note: even if I DO need a new instrument cluster, I'm not going to let that shop do it!) I'll follow up here once this is resolved.
Now my question: I need to remove the instrument cluster, and I found a video on YT about that--but it doesn't appear to be the same as my 2013 model. Does anybody know how to remove the instrument cluster on a 2013 Soul? Reply here, or email [email protected], or both. Thank you! ken 1/25/2021
