According to the car computer I'm averaging about 36.06 miles per gallon. Using (Total Miles Drive / # of Gallon), I get about 34.53 miles per gallon.

Optima Hybrid seems to get poor gas mileage when the weather is cold. This car does best when outside temp is around 60 F - 85 F and when you drive between 45mph to 60mph.

Pros and Cons

Pros

- Nice Infinity Audio System: Sounds great with just enough bass.
- Good dashboard layout. Everything is easy to read and large buttons.
- Good power when ECO mode is OFF and when car is warmed up.
- Handsome exterior with HID headlights, foldable side mirrors.
- Nice FULL sunroof
- Very smooth and quiet ride when car is warmed up.

Cons

- Very rough when car is cold. Feels like car is running out of gas or something (hesitation). This will last about a minute or two.
- When ECO mode is on (its on by default), transmission seems to hang on 5th gear when driving on the highway speed of 55mph-65mph. RPM runs at 3000 rpm. You can turn ECO mode off or speed up before car shifts into 6th gear.
- Car sits too low. Front bumper will scrape during parking. Black plastic underneath the front bumper will fall off when you try to back out.
- Wind noise on the driver side of the window. Sounds like you left your windows slightly open and sometime I tried to close my window even though its closed already.
- Too much useless information on the center dash and on the touch screen. Kia should make clock little bigger, more gas usage information like average mpg during your trip, and apps you can use by connecting to your smart phone.
- Very small trunk.

It's the nature of the beast, all batteries perform their best at 80 degrees. Nice documenting...I have been interested in some real-world Optima Hybrid info. Where do you live, and how many miles are on your car? I could do the math....but I'd rather not. Haha.

Thanks, I live in Northern Virginia and have about 9400. I kept detailed log of my gas usage because I wanted to find out how much money I'm saving by driving a hybrid. I used to own a 2000 Toyota Camry V6 which got about 23mpg.

I believe I will save about $400 per every 10K miles @ gas price of $3.50 with 36mpg I'm getting with hybrid. I paid about $3K - $4K premium over standard model. I will need to drive this car for 10 years before I break even. :(

I have had, after almost a year and 22K miles, a very similar experience to the one logged by the original poster. My winter time MPGs, though, were lower that the ones posted here.

I agree with most of the pros/cons listed. The ones I kind of disagree (meaning my experience has been different), so other posters and potential buyers can compare, are:

1) Even warmed up I do not think the car has a "smooth" ride. I come from a 1993 Nissan Altima and a 2017 Honda Pilot, and the Kia feels definitely "rougher" that those two (admitting that those two vehicles were designed for maybe different rides, purposes, etc.)
2) The times when the ride/powertrain feels smoother are difficult to predict or control. They are very random. One morning it may feel subdued and smooth (as mentioned in bullet 1, only up to a point, in my opinion), and the next morning (under similar conditions) there is a lot of jerkiness and hesitation all the way through.
3) I am experiencing some minor, but annoying, rattle/squeaks coming from the sunroof. Also, in some instances, there some audible "cracks" that seem to come from the seals surrounding the windows (front, back, sides).
4) I do not feel the trunk is that small (although it is definitely smaller that the regular Optima, or any other regular sedan). Now, my expectations (and needs) were not for a big, cavernous trunk. I found out I could pick about two relatives at the airport them carrying big cases, and put all their stuff in the trunk. Use this as an estimate, for your own personal carrying needs. I feel the shape of the trunk itself is nice and well though (both the opening of the trunk as well as its depth inside).

I would feel very grateful to Kia is they found out ways to improve the powertrain behavior with their 2013 model, and apply a similar software change to 2011/2012 models, in order to smooth out their functioning. I am aware this may not be possible because of the hardware itself, but again, I would be a satisfied Kia customer if it happened (and would increase my chances of purchasing another Kia in the future).

Hope you enjoy your Kia!

Love affair with Hybrid

I have seems so many articles about complaints from hybrid owners from almost every make of cars. Very similar to these postings Unless one drives a taxi or is a salesman driving hundreds of miles per day I have never seen one study where it pays to buy the Hybrid model. Besides the litany of cold weather battery issues , poor drive train issues , the reduced trunk space and of course the added premium I see negative returns of real dollars . If one wants to save the environment take public transportation or recycle more at home . Hybrids are a poor choice what ever reason you deem important . as an aside my Optima ex GDI gets great gas mileage mostly in stop and go traffic

So far I'm highly impressed with the mileage of my Optima Hybrid. The fuel savings amounts to at least half my lease payment. The Hybrid lease was only $15/month more than the non-hybrid. I'm saving at least that much in gas, so I think it's totally worth it. VERY pleased. I'm averaging about 38 MPG, all city.

Would you buy another Hybrid?

I have several friends that have bought hybrid vehicles of various makes. Every one of them liked them initially, but when they replaced them they didn't buy another hybrid. None were Kia. Mostly Toyota Highlander and Lexus. So, if you replace your Optima Hybrid, will it be with another hybrid? Great reviews BTW.

Your analysis is flawed .Lessing is just another form of buying and are you telling me you like the hybrid's additional cost because you save 15 a month . Are you serious a 30K+ car and you are thrilled to save $15.00 month????

I think you misunderstood what I said. I believe that I'll be saving more than $15/month over the NON-HYBRID Optima, meaning the extra $15 in lease payment is worth it for Hybrid vs. Non-Hybrid. The fuel savings from Rondo to Hybrid are about HALF my lease payment. I was spending about $250/month in fuel for the Rondo. I have only had the hybrid one full month, and I only spent $128 in fuel over 1,300 miles. My lease payment is $259/month (My negotiated price was $25,900). I was paying $276/month for the Rondo ($16,900 over 6 years). My insurance went up $4/month (negligible). So, adding up fuel and payment (not including insurance) the Rondo cost ~$530/month to operate. The Hybrid is ~$380/month. I only have it for 3 years, so I don't see how I can lose. We will see after a few months. My dealer doesn't even stock non-hybrid LX or EX models. If you want a non-hybrid Optima you have to get an SX or dealer trade.

I don't have a hybrid, but rather the SX 2.0Turbo. I have also noticed that my car computer is almost always about 1.5 mile per gallon higher than what I calculate via (miles driven / gallons). How convenient that it errs on the high side.

Using car's computer data, I am still averaging 36.09 mpg. My dad purchased 2013 Camry Hybrid and he is getting 43-44 mpg!

New Pros and Cons

Pros

- Car is still running
-

Cons

- Trunk still small. :( Can't fit two golf bags.
- Maybe this noise was there from the beginning, but now I hear electrical whining noise from engine when car comes to stop.
- Auto headlight sensor not working well. Headlight is on during bright daylight sometimes.

Reporting after 27 months/46K Miles

- My MPG since I last reported on May 2013 is about 33-34 MPG. Real MPG (and not the computer's. I stopped following that one as 90% of the time it overestimates).
- If any 2012 Hybrid user is still having problems with hesitation in lower gears, ask you dealer to install ECM 132. I have done that recently, and what a world of (good!) difference it makes!
- Pros: low cost of maintenance. Infinity sound system sounds superb, specially when paired with iPod 5th generation. Great looks! Hesitation has disappeared (after the before mentioned ECM).
- Cons: Some low squeaks still noticed (still feel like the seals, specially on the sunroof, are being "squished"). Some very minor paint chipping in the front hood. Turning wheel is getting scraped with normal use (I noticed that the 2013 has changed the wheel material, I am assuming, to avoid this problem in the newer models).

Great info from you guys.
Recently there's been a knew import law here which has reduced the import tax of hybrid cars from 45% to %0. So a normal gasoline car will have 35 to 90% import tax depending on it's power train but all hybrids will have 0% which brings down the price of hybrids to near or lower than non-hybrids.
Considering the price of replacing the battery and other maintenance how much more(or less) would owning a hybrid cost (without considering the fuel price) and how's the reliability comparing it to non-Hybrids?
I was seriously thinking about getting a hybrid but after reading this thread I'm a little hesitant, specially considering the fact that this is the first time hybrid cars will be mass imported here and the low price of fuel that we have (around $0.4 per liter).
