you need an adapter to plug into the power port inside the car (cigarette lighter) that uses a 9V battery. that will keep enought power for the radio to not loose signal.

As Petso referred to above, you need to back feed power into the electrical system of the car. What you need to do this can vary from car to car. You can find the 9 volt lighter plugin adapters at Amazon and other places but they do not always work. You may have to turn on the ignition switch to pull all the electrical relays on so that the voltage can get to all the memory locations in the car. It is not just the radio but the engine, transmission, power windows locations, and the heater controls that can have memory set for them.

There are dangers involved with this if you are not careful. The 9 volt battery back up may not be enough voltage or power to power up the 12 volt system, and in that case you lost all the memory when the car battery is disconnected. A 12 volt battery is best and it has to be big enough to power all the cars electrical with the key on.

Next dangerous thing is that with two power sources contacted and the electrical system turn on, you have to be extremely careful to not let the disconnected battery cables touch anything as they have full power on them from the second battery power source. The electrical system is NOT designed to protect the system from shorting when it is connected this way and you can cause major electrical damage if a removed cable is shorted.

Just be very careful.
