2009 Kia Spectra Turn Signal

3830 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  DavesSpectra
My daughter has a 2009 Kia Spectra EX that has been a bit problematic. Our most current issue is the passenger side blinker for both the front and the back flasher stays on all the time. Even with the car off...

I pulled the hazard fuse so the battery didn’t drain and proceeded to research what it could be. I thought there would be an easily accessible flasher relay that failed or maybe even the selector switch, but I’m not finding much online. Calling the dealership, I’m getting different answers from different service departments. Some say a whole fuse box, some don’t.

Can someone provide a location for the flasher relay or maybe some guidance? Thank a bunch.

ASK her if she had had anyone recently replace a bulb...Could have been installed improperly and causing a short/power backfeed. OR a socket has corroded and is shorting with the lights wire.
But yes the flasher is part of the body control module.

No recent flasher bulb changes, but she did have a bad taillight about 6 months ago on that side. I’ll check for a short.

Does anyone think the flasher relay might have a short across the line side of the passenger signal?
HI -- I just looked this up in the Haynes manual that I got from the library ( I DO NOT recommend this manual).

Starting in late 04 the flasher is included in something called the ETACS module which has fuses and relays. It's supposedly located under the dash on the left side.(Driver's side?)

If you replace it, they tell you to transfer the exisitng fuses and relays.

I'm betting that it has some bleeping little processor in it, and that its spendy -- but maybe not. Worst case would be that it would require (shudder) programming.

I would take out the bulbs one at a time and see what happens. Also unplug the harness from each one at a time. ( Do this in whichever order is the easiest.). You might also pull fuses one at a time and see if an unrelated fuse shuts it off.

Disclaimer -- I don't know anything about these cars -- I just bought a fairly high mileage 09. These are just the general electrical things that I would try.

Good Luck,

hj

Sounds like the problem some BCM/ETACS modules have... They can cause some very strange problems...(wipers/directional signals/headlights coming on at night and draining the battery/etc...)...
It is located on the back of the interior fuse panel and is user replaceable... Check out a local "pull-a-part" salvage yard for a donor car... A KIA dealership will charge a lot for this module ($600~$700) and a salvage yard will get $30~$50...
