(I've seen this come up, but I have more info to provide)
The “ESC OFF” light in my girlfriend's 2008 Sorento LX 4WD is constantly on now (it went off for a few months last year and things went back to "normal") along with the "ABS" light being on. The check engine light is NOT on. It has very poor acceleration up to around 40mph.
When switching 4WD modes, I don’t hear any clicking underneath, which made me think it was the transfer motor case that had to be replaced. When switching modes, the 4WD light does NOT come on, but when switched to 4x4 Lo, the "4WD LOW" light blinks green.
I took it to AutoZone today and got only the following ABS-related codes (my cheapo bluetooth reader didn’t throw any codes):
C1213 Wheel Speed Sensor Fault
C1627 CAN Time-out 4WD
Any ideas on where to start? Before getting the codes, I was going to replace the Transfer Motor Case (I tried banging it with a rubber mallet to see if the gears were messed up like on a starter [worked for someone else, but not me]. For C1213, I don't know which wheel sensor might be out (if that is true). Also, for C1627, I've read it could be as bad as a faulty 4WD ECU or as simple as cleaning the contacts. I wonder if a bad Transfer Motor Case might be responsible for throwing these codes.
My understanding is that the typical fix to this problem is the Brake Light Switch, but I'm getting no codes for it, it was replaced under the recall (of course, it could break again), and the brake lights seem to work normally.
I'd be grateful for any guidance. We're not rich, so taking it to a dealer who, based on other's experiences, would just start replacing things without any real diagnosis would be expensive. Thanks so much!
