I have a 2007 Spectra with automatic transmission and the shift button has started to act up. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm in gear and try to shift to park or vice versa. The button on the shifter won't depress and I need to press it very hard to get it depress and allow me to shift. Any ideas what the cause of this is? Thanks in advance.

Check your brake lights. The shifter depends on the brakes being on and will refuse to engage unless you have your foot on the brake pedal. It may be the brake light switch located high up on the brake pedal arm. Either out of adjustment or bad. You should hear a very quiet "click" at the shifter location from a release solenoid when you step on the brakes and move the shifter.
