Hello all,

First I wish ALL a very "Happy & Healthy 2016". It has been a long time since I posted on the forum and our 2007 Kia Rondo is getting to really annoy us with 2 problems.

#1 . We did have the Airbag recall done about 2 years ago ( I believe) well the other day the Airbag light came on and off a few times and now stays on all the time. Called the dealer and were told we have to pay their diagnostic which is about $120.00 and then they would let us know if we had to pay for the repair or not?? I also called Kia and were told the same thing so we set up a appointment for next week.

#2 . Since it will be at the dealer we also want them to check again the noise from the left side front end. We have had left and front sway bar linkage changed and also checking the loosen problem on the strut. What is annoying is that this has been going on for years even our local garage does't seem to know what the noise is. To me is sounds like a noisy bearing that changes in pitch or a very loose strut or could be a loose cross member (?) At times you hear the noise more going up a hill over bumpy road and sometimes on a smooth road it does the noise does vary with speed BUT seems to be noisy at a slower speed.

Sorry to bother you all but any input that I can bring back to the dealer will be helpful??

My wife actually wants us to get rid of the Rondo BUT believe it or not it ONLY has less then 23 K on it! yes that si 23, 000 ( I use an old pickup mostly) while this is for my wife as the size of the Kia Rondo is what she likes.

Thanks for looking at this.

Update on Air Bag spring: Okay it seem we did have this done back in Sept. 2012, went there for service and they did the recall along with 2 other ones according to the invoice I found. I kept in my glove compartment the original recall that had on it "Kia will provide a lifetime warranty for the driver's air bag clock spring contact assembly for your vehicle" Does anyone know if this means also after the recall was performed??? Going to the dealer this Wed. also to see if finally they can help get rid of the noise in the front end.

Front end noise - could be from struts. Sometimes the rubber/plastic cover on the shock absorber comes loose and makes weird noise. Glue it back in place using window polyurethane.

Clock spring - I'm not sure...

PLP thanks for the input I won't have the dealer check that noise problem again tomorrow as they have the $120 charge, will look at it myself when I get a chance. Hopefully

ALL will go ok as far as the Air Bag problem should be interesting to what they will do as far as a charge to check it first.

Hi!
A few months back the airbag light came on on my 2007 Carens (with 145.000 km), so I took it to an authorized dealer who said after (free) diagnostic that it's probably a clock spring problem and it could be ordered for about 170$. It seemed a bit too much at the time, so I didn't fix this right away and now I see a new genuine clock spring can can be ordered on eBay for about 50-60$. I was wandering if anyone knows how can I check and be certain that it will fit my model because I saw 2 different Part. No. that were used in that Carens year/type: 93490-1D400 (10ch) and 93490-1D600 (7ch) clock spring?
Thanks!

as far as the airbag light, could be multiple things. the weight classification system in the Rondo has a lot of issues, or even a defective seat belt buckle switch, but if it is your clock spring it should be covered. as far as the noise, its hard to tell without hearing it. is it a noise over bumps or continuous noise that changes with speed? if clunk, ball joints are very common and easy to check. jack up the wheel you wanna check and pull down on the lower control arm. ANY play is too much and will cause a noise.

Thanks Kiatechkyle for your reply.....Good news as last week Kia did authorize the 2nd replacement to be done no charge, dealer was GREAT and did follow up on it for us. From what I gather a different type the clock spring is being used (?). While at the dealer I also had them do a anti-freeze change and oil and lube.

As far as the "noise" that is something I will have checked later on, to me it sounds like a "wheel bearing" but not being a mechanic I probably am wrong, at highway speeds all is actually fine as far as normal sound.

Rest assured our next vehicle will be at the same dealer.

I'd love to know more about this if you have information. My Air Bag light is constantly on (covered with electrical tape) and frequently the passenger seatbelt light will start flashing even when the seat is empty. Are these related issues?

If it is a wheel bearing...it's considered power train .. So if you're the original owner it would fall into the 10/100 warranty.. As for the person that was inquiring about the eBay clock spring.. Even if it's genuine and it works you will still need to take it to the dealer to have the airbag light cleared or calibrated.. Dealer is going to charge you 100-120 to do that.. The view doesn't seem worth the climb to buy an eBay part with no warranty then take it to the dealer.. Considering that's even why the airbag light is on. To me there is no amount of $$$ that is worth one of my airbags not deploying in an accident.. And yes if the clock spring recall has been done it is a lifetime repair.. Even if it wasn't KIA would never say no to a safety issue like that they do not want their name associated with a death in an accident over a 200.00 repair.. They will warranty it every time. The dealer would just need to get special permission to goodwill the repair

Yes. There are pressure sensors in the seat track on the passenger front seat to detect the weight of an object sitting in that seat. if it doesn't reach the correct weight it will not deploy the air bag. your problem could still be a few things: 1.) the weight classification sensors need a 'reset', which just basically zero's out the measurement and I have done this to fix it. you will need a scan tool that has bi-directional communication with Airbag modules. This will be the cheapest repair and likely need to be done at a dealer. 2.) the pressure sensors in the track are bad and you need a new track. this will be expensive. unfortunately the sensors are built into the seat and not serviced separately. 3.) a bad weight classification module. From what you say about the passenger seatbelt light my hunch is the sensors just need to be zero'd.

The clock spring malfunction was established by the authorised dealer, of course, and they ask now 180$ for part plus 30$ labour (210$ altogether). I found genuine new part shipped from Korea for 60$, I asked the dealer if I can bring my part and if they can just install it and reset the codes, they said OK (so it will cost me around 90$ altogether which is a big difference). The question I asked is only because I searched the Kia parts database by VIN number but it's not very helpful because it lists 2 different clock springs as compatible (10 ch and 7 ch), so I'm just not sure which to order. As for the recall, I think it didn't relate to European Kias and there is no point talking to dealers about it especially considering that at the time of purchase the warranty for new Carens was only 3 years in my country which is now way passed.

I appreciate this. Definitely will mention this to the dealer next time I'm in.
