When I turn the key, there is a terrible grinding noise and then it eventually starts but takes about 5 seconds or so. Could this be the starter? Good thing I have the service plan. Geesh. How can a starter go on a 1 year old van with 10,000 miles?
It could be the starter, the battery, or the wire in between them. When it happens again, stop cranking it, then hit the key again and it should start alright. What happening is the starter gear isn't engaging with the flexplate like it should. When you move the key to "start", the starter gear jumps out and should line up with the flexplate, which also has a gear. The grinding noise is the starter gear grinding against the side of the flexplate teeth.
