hey guys, some of you may remember me from when i needed some help with getting my rio running after it had been sitting for a while. the car has been great and i put about 10k miles on it since i got it in august. recently started a new job in Philadelphia area and I'm from the allentown area, about an hour drive on the turnpike. well after the first month or so it seems my kia's transmission has gone out. i left work today and went to merge onto the turn pike and i felt and heard the car shift, but the car had no speed. 50mph down hill tops with my foot to the floor. tried to make it to the next exit just to get off the toll road. i made it maybe another 5 miles til i was flagged down by one of the state farm/penndot trucks. at this point i was doing a wapping 35mph. checked all fluids and all were good. once the car was not going fast the check engine light lit and i could feel that the car had gone to limp mode. to me I'm assuming the trans is shot since I've heard that these are known to go bad around 150k miles or so (from a kia mechanic friend i have) the car has just over 148k on it. just wanted to see if you guys kinda think the same thing i/ my friend do. ill dig into it later this week when i get home from work, kinda bummed because it wasn't a bad car and i got it for free and now i may have to get rid of it/ spend 800 minimum for a rebuilt trans. the bright side is i can at least do all the repair work myself

When was the last time the transmission fluid was changed?
There is a post from "Loyal 2.7T" about his tranny in his 2000 Sephia on this forum.
You might want to read it. These trannys can do very strange things when the fluid goes bad.

i never completely changed it, but i just replaced and axel and lost about 3 quarts or so and refilled it. obviously its not changed but some new fluid would do more good than harm, ill look into seeing if the filters clogged or something, thank you!

That's what the post is about...
The trannys are from an older Mazda/Ford design and for some reason the fluid and something in the tranny react with each other and create a "goo" that can block passage ways and torque converters. Drop the pan on it and clean out the goo and do a change like Loyal 2.7T did. He got his tranny to run like new.
Here's the link....(it's worth your time to read it!)

Here's another on the "goo" or as they say "gunk"

well my grandfather had his buddy who owns a transmission shop come and drive it, he said more than likely the car has lost 3rd gear and overdrive. he said he'll open it up for free if i pull it out and bring it down to him, guess i know what I'm doing this weekend...
