I bought a used 2000 Sportage today and it runs pretty good.
The woman I bought it from said there was only one thing wrong with it that she knew of.
She said her son told her something like there was a heat sensor that was bad and it would affect the operation of the tranny.
The only thing that I really noticed in the forty or so miles I drove it today was that the temperature gauge needle never showed much over a quarter way up.
Any thoughts on this?
Also, is the 2.0 motor in this an interference motor, so that I'd need to check the timing belt right away.

The 2L 4I engine is not an interference engine...

There are 2 coolant sensors,
  • one for the dash gauge, this is just a linier device and will not affect the engine,
  • second is the ECT (engine coolant temperature), this sends the information to the ECU (Engine control unit) and will affect the engine..

You should first verify that the engine is indeed coming to running temp, >180*f (use an IR gun), you may need to replace the thermostat to obtain a baseline... Philip
