Hello all,

I have a 2000 2-door Kia Sportage, and recently I made a big boo-boo. I rent a hangar at the local airport, and while the hangar door was closing, I forgot that the passenger side door to my Sportage was open.

Oops.

Well, the good news is that there was no significant external damage to the door, because, as the hangar door (which is VERY heavy) slowly closed on it, it sort-of pushed the Sportage door out of the way (toward the vehicle) so the door did not break off and the window remained intact (and there is no evidence of body damage to the vehicle). The top of the door bent inward, and I was able to close it, but I am having trouble with the latch. At first, I could re-open the door if I hit the door handle with a mallet several times, but now it is stuck closed in spite of different attempts to try to reopen it. The lock (inside) will not raise up completely--not through pulling the inside latch or using the key. I don't know if the lock shaft is bent or if the latch mechanism itself is damaged. Additionally, I cannot completely lower the window (power window), it only goes down about 3" before it stops (I don't want to try to force it down completely for fear it may break or get stuck and not go back up).

The problem I am facing is that about the only option left (unless I get lucky and it happens to unlock after multiple tapping in the future) would be to remove the interior door trim by breaking/cutting it off (it cannot come off with the door closed, even if I were to remove the passenger seat), and try to wiggle inside the latch mechanism to get the door to open again. The trouble with that is that, if I try this option, I will need to find a replacement door trim and/or a replacement door.

However, most of the Sportages of that era are four-doors. Which brings me to my question: Will the front passenger door from a 4-door Sportage fit the passenger side of a 2-door Sportage? I know that, normally, doors from coupes and sedans are not interchangeable, but perhaps Kia, in an effort to simplify its assembly line, used the same design doors. It's a stretch, but it does not cost me to ask....

Finally, if anyone can give advice on different things I can try to get this door to open without cutting or breaking anything, I would appreciate it.

While the doors are similar, and share some internal parts, a quick look at kiacarparts.net shows different part #s / parts for the doors.

re: how to open, would recommend driving to a locksmith that has a suitable 'slim jim' or door tool to get down to the lock mechanism to pop open, that would be the safest way to open and preserve the door panel / interior.

* There is a plastic pivot hook, internal to the door (only accessible w/ the interior panel removed) where the door lock rod connects -> with the lock mechanism rod.. If that plastic pivot is worn or damaged, the door lock / lock mechanism rods will not operate properly, or may be 'floating' disconnected inside the door frame, this is FYI.
