Hello everyone,
I have had my first Kia Sportage for about 6 months now, and it has been ok. It is a fun little car but has had its issues.
The latest for me is a bad rear wheel bearing. Drivers Rear.
I have took the wheel and drum off but left the backing plate on. I took off something that had 4 bolts that looks like retainer that I thought would allow me to remove the axle, but after I took it off the I was still not able to pull the axle out. It would only slide a little then stop pretty solid.

I am looking for tips on how to get the axle out. Can it slide out with the brake backing plate still on? Is there a retainer inside the diff I need to undo first?
I see there are already helpful threads on the wheel bearing subject, but not on axle removal.
Thank You. 2000 Kia Sportage 4x4

Aye, so 4x4 wire has a good thread on this already.

The 4 bolts I was talking about was the retaining plate and the axle should slide right out once thats unbolt. I will have to try again with more force.

Thanks for the tip, reversing the drum is clever. Mine came out with some moderate prying. I wasnt trying hard enough before
I replaced the leaking wheel seal (proper tool highly recommended or atleast a large socket for installing) and re greased the bearings.

Thanks again.

Attached are pics of the locknut and lock washer (with folded over tab) and bearing housing. In my pic the race is seized into the axle housing. I couldnt get it out or the locknut off so I gave up. Re greasing the bearings reduced some nasty noises, for now.
