My starter is disengaging too soon most of the time. I crank the key, engine turns over, sometimes it starts, most of the time the starter kicks out and stops turning the engine over and spins freely. Seems that I have some luck (eventually) when I give it gas while I turn the key. If I don't give it gas, it spins out and never starts. I can push start the KIA every time which I have grown used to whenever I can find a hill to park on. What is the trick to keep the starter engaged until the engine fires?

I was remiss to mention in the previous post that this issue could be caused by an electrical shortfall..

The Bendix is thrown out by centrifugal force and held out by rotational force. If the RPM of the starter drops the Bendix may suffer..

Use an AMP Prob/AmpClamp meter and check the current draw, and a Volt meter to measure voltage drop at the starter... Philip
