09/26/2005 The going gets tougher
Our Sorento Around the World driver Christer Gerlach hasn't been able to report for almost two weeks due to no mobile phone connection. But we have heard from Christer and he is now in Ulaan Bator, the capital of Mongolia, after driving 1,300 lonely, dusty kilometers in the last seven days, mostly off-road (as there were no roads!) from Altay in Russia through western Mongolia.
Christer is fine and the car is fine, but not the roads. The going was tough, with only 160 km travelled on one day, over rough tracks, gravel, large rocks and across fords in small rivers, through endless dust and eventually up into snow. Christer says that night time temperatures dropped to below zero and he has had to sleep in the car for four nights.

But the Sorento has been running fine, with no problems (in particular, the engine and automatic gearbox), and has been coping well with very low octane fuel - down to 80 RON at some places - and has suffered no more punctures.

Christer is now planning to head north to the Russian border, moving on to Ulan Ude to call on the local Kia agent. During Christer's time in Kazakhstan, several TV broadcasts covered the Sorento Around the World Expedition and numerous print-media interviews were conducted.

Now, the toughest test is yet to come - the 3,500 km dive across Siberia!
