I have some pitting around the camshafts. Wonder what is causing it and what I can do to fix.

Is there noise or is it running bad, or it this just something you noticed while the valve cover was off? Why are you in the engine? How many miles on the car?

it does have a noise. There is an audible rattle when accelerating. I also notice it when driving at a steady speed and I back off the pedal a little. The car has 123,000 on it. It occurs most at the top of the acceleration right before it shifts out.

I would adjust the valves and see if that gets rid of the noise. Not sure if that will keep the pitting from getting worse or not.
