My 08 Sorento, 2 wheel drive, 3.3 V6 started missing last month throwing P0305 code. I had recently replaced all the coils and spark plugs at 140k miles. I figured one of the coils had gone bad. I replaced the coil and the spark plug-no change. Then I found out that if I drove it a few miles, let it sit for about 10 minutes, and then restarted it, it would run perfectly. No missing, no codes. As soon as it cooled back down, it would start all over again. My son, a good mechanic, but mostly on deisel pickups, said he though it was the injector. New injector installed, again no change. Any suggestions? This thing had run perfectly for the last 80k miles. I really like it except for the gas mileage, and would like to get it running good again.

I took it to the Kia dealer. They said it was missing and wanted me to spend $886 to have them put in all new plugs and coils. You don't want to know what I told them. They couldn't even tell me what cylinder it was missing on. Autozone told me it was missing on #5 . Code P0305. It is throwing the same code now.

Just so I understand... mileage is about 220K miles? With parts listed, that would lead me to suspect internal motor wear in the valve train, compression test, and check of valve train parts.OR even from description, heavily carboned intake valves soaking up injected fuel, particularly #5 cylinder.
No "this is your rides fix" for symptoms posted, but some thoughts to what to check. A good scanner with live data reading capability while engine running will help you greatly....Good Luck!

I know this is not what you want to hear so don't yell at me.
When you have the top off carefully check the injector harness clips.
They get brittle and when you start moving things they can crack.
The intermittent missing could be a heat issue with expanding or contracting plastic.
I had that on my 3.5( I know, you have a 3.3) but plastic is plastic.

First, the veh only has 148k. It was running good till it started missing on number 5. I will do some checks including compression and taking a close look at the wiring and connectors for #5 . I also find it surprising that even with the miss, the last tank of gas(all after the missing started) was a good 21.4 mpg. I'll update after I've done the compression tests and looked at the wiring and connectors.

Well, I replaced the connector on the #5 coil. The connector on the injector looks good, and all the other connectors for that cylinder look good. Still missing, same code. I haven't done a compression check yet. My tester won't work to do the compression on this vehicle. Not long enough. I don't have a diagnostic tool, and don't know anyone that has one other than my son, but he lives about 600 miles from here.

Spray some flammable brake cleaner or starting fluid around the intake manifold going to that cylinder while idling. If the idle speed jumps then that might be the issue.

I tried the spraying around the intake. No changes. I checked the compression on all 3 cyl on that bank. All 3 were 181 to 183 lbs. The wiring looks and ohms out good. Just a little bit ago, I switched out the spark plug and coil on #5 to #1 . Still missing but haven't checked the code yet. Got another problem I need to take care of tomorrow. The right side of the bumper and front part of the fender is falling off. Looks like I've lost a couple bolts.

Well, it's running good again. I feel sort of dumb though. Someday I'll check new parts to make sure they are good. It was the coil all the time. When I finished the brake job, I took it to town and had the codes read again. The miss moved from #5 to #1 . Got a replacement for the brand new bad coil and all is good.
