    Continued...

Like Windows...a Linux installed OS on a hard drive won't boot to a foreign Mother board, video card, lan, chipset...
As far as installing on the GX270's... You may have too little ram (try at least 1GB, and 2GB is even better) also make sure you are trying to load a 32bit copy of linux and NOT a 64bit version... The P4 processor doesn't like 64bit.

The MP3 "problem" may be because the NAS may be formated with NTFS or FAT32 and the MP3 Player may not be able to navigate the directory of the NAS.

See...I got you "hooked" now it's only time before you will have no desire to "feed" Microsoft :)...
    Learn...Blow it up...Reload it...Try a different version...
You are not "stuck" with only one MP3 player or "windows type" file explorer, or just the EI browser... YOU have a choice!
Enjoy...And I'll be there if you have questions...

Wine is not a perfected piece of software... It will run some Windows programs "if" it is supplied with the proper ".DLL" Windows files...
Check out winehq.org and check out the "AppDB" tab at the top of the forum.
If you have a powerful newer computer with lots of HD space and memory (4GB) you can run the actual Windows operating system within a "virtual machine" inside of Linux...so you could "start" a Windows session within Linux... Then jump to another program running on the Linux kernel and back to the virtual "Windows"...
    Kinda neat.
The password login can be disabled BUT the whole reason behind Linux" is security built around the administrators (your) password... Rogue programs can't gain access to what is called the "root" and do damage to the OS.
I start up my virtual Windows XP with a password also...

I'd like to know more about Wine. My understanding is that I can run windows programs on linux using this. I guess I need to read more about it but there are some Windows programs that I want to use on this machine.

It keeps asking me for my password to login, can I disable this?

I'm all over the place, just excited I guess. Sorry.

Well, I finally got Mint linux installed. I tried installing it on 2 old Dell Optiplex GX270's and it wouldn't complete the install. It would load from the DVD into ram, but not install and it was running very slowly.

I installed it on an old K8N Asus motherboard with a Sempron processor and I'm typing this on that setup. I had a Solid state drive that I just bought and installed the OS on that. I tried the SSD in the GX270 but still no luck.

I'm having an issue. I have a NAS and although the Linux box can see it, can copy and write to it, it can't play music from it. I click on the mp3 and it won't play. If I drag the file to the linux desktop, it plays fine. Am I missing something?

I've downloaded a .xls file and the LibreOffice Calc opens it perfectly. That is really impressive.

I got thunderbird set up to check a rarely used email address and it configured fine. (I use Thunderbird on my Win7 machine too)

    Hi Dave

I have a problem with my kia spectra5 2008 sx my ac compressor is not getting any power at all and also my vents are stuck on defrost mode. I checked all the fuses and all of them are fine. I also checked the relays also fine and I even bought the ac temp control of the center console and still nothing at all. A lot of people have been telling me that its the ac computer if that is the case where is the computer located? Thank you for your time and look forward hearing from you.

    Hi Dave,
Thanks for info, will try what you suggest, incedently, the car has done 218000 klms, and has had 2 timing belts, but the last timing belt was not fitted with a new tensioner bearing, which makes a noise on engine start, but goes away after a few seconds.
I did look around the engine bay to see if anything had come loose or disconnected, i found at the front top right of the head, a black connector two pin, the catch on top of connector had broken off, but managed to secure with a couple of plastic ties, maybe?.
    cheers.

Dave: seen post on drivers cv joint stuck. I have tried everything. Pry bars, screw drivers. Taken off tranny mounting bracket for better acess. airhammer with chisels. drilled through axel housing and used slid hammer. Taken out passenger side and pounded from inside tranny with 5 foot bar and sledge. Nothing works.

Hello, I seen your post to another member about the help with installing a new timing belt on a Kia Spectra 2006. I would appreciate this info as I have about 112k on my Kia now and am concerned about that belt. I believe I could do this work with a guide to follow. I plan on getting the kit that includes a new water pump also. Please let me know what you think. I'll check back. Thank you
