Perhaps they got smart and didn't wrap the exhaust around the bottom of the rear axle this time? Anyway, 8" of ground clearance with a 20" tire seems a rather odd combination. There aren't too many places where that kind of useful clearance would feel very nice on 20" tires, and the rims would certainly be more at risk. I do see they offer 18" on the lower trim LX and higher trim EX, so the good news is that one could at least drop back that far on the S and SX without any brake clearance issues.

As for pricing -- it appears that even the LX has quite a few features that were at considerable extra cost on the current Sorento generation, so one must be very careful in making any apples to apples comparisons.

Interesting that they've finally given up on 4 bangers for this range of vehicle. The 3.8L is claimed to produce 291HP and 262LbFt of torque. They are getting 290HP out of the current 3.3L and 252LbFt of torque without any stress, so you have to wonder what the perceived benefit of the 3.8L will be. Previous EPA was 19/24, and some seem to hoping that a 4 strokes/rev Atkinson Cycle will help the MPG on this one a bit, and would also explain the lack of a power increase commensurate with the 0.5L increase. I heard someone mention Miller, but Miller would imply a supercharger to compress against. Anyone seen more specs on this thing?
I find it hard to believe that anyone would even consider a 4cyl for a 2 ton SUV. I also don't understand what the deal is with the 3.8L. There doesn't appear to be any benefit whatsoever with the extra .5L (30-ish cubic inches)....same power output...same torque...same mileage. It's even more mind boggling to me that their premium offering in the segment doesn't have the established 3.3L twin turbo engine as an option since it's been out in the wild with the Stinger and Genesis platforms for a couple of years. 365 hp at 6,000 RPM and 376 lb-ft of torque at 1,300 Ė 4,500 RPM would make the Telluride competitive with anything in this segment that's even remotely close to the same price range. What a wasted opportunity.

Cheers!

Yep. Why they donít try to be competitive as a performance SUV with the Americans is what beats me. They only want to compete with the Japanese. That 3.3T with the telluride muscle looks would be a perfect match

quote from Kia media

"Telluride will be assembled at Kia’s manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia (KMMG) alongside certain trims of the Sorento and Optima. When it goes on sale this year (pricing will be announced near the on-sale date), Telluride will be available in four trims, LX, EX, S and SX with a choice of front-wheel or optional all-wheel drive."

My understanding is that the 3.3T would produce too much power/torque for a transverse application. Ford had a similar issue with the outgoing Explorer, whose top trim had to settle for a detuned 3.5TT EcoBoost. The '20 Explorer will return to a longitudinal layout and will accordingly be able to accommodate more powerful engines.

This is why Hyundai elected to go with a longitudinal power train layout for the upcoming Genesis GV80 and GV70. The GV70 will likely have the 3.3 twin turbo available as an option. This one really has my interest. I might have to hold onto my Sorento for one more year.

Yeah, I may just hang on for another year as well. After some reflection, I don't feel like 290hp is going to do it for me in a larger vehicle. It's adequate in the Sorento, but just adequate. My wife doesn't care, but I do when I'm doing kid hauling days.

Cheers!

Is the new 3.8 going to be non-GDI? That would be good.

Not much choice. Most competition is 300 hp unless you want a perennial 16-18mpg

In the grander scheme of things, what I spend on fuel in a year is rather inconsequential. So for me, consideration of fuel economy is rather far down on the list of "must haves". I almost bought a hemi Durango instead, but my wife liked the more "car like" Sorento better.

Cheers!
