Help Please - 2001 Kia Sportage Died while driving

Hi Guys! Was driving my 2001 Kia Sportage about 60 mph when basically I lost all power - the engine died... No smoke from anywhere.... Coasted to the side of the road. Tried starting - cranks well... no firing and no feel like any sort of attempt to fire. Taking to someone knowledgeable, he strongly suggests fuel pump. Clicking on the ignition, no sound of the initial "whirr" of the fuel pump coming up... Also suggested sending a little starting fluid in the intake (after the MAS sensor) to see if we could get a little ignitionfrom that... makes sense to me... Have a new fuel pump, strainer and fuel filter coming in tomorrow and will attempt (using kiatechinfo.com help) to replace the fuel pump. ANY suggestions, help, insight, or ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance... I love this forum and I love this country... happy Independence Day for us in the US and to others... when you celerate yours... Happy ID as well...

Garage

Before spending money on parts, I'd try the starter fluid, and then based on that you will know if it's only a fuel delivery problem, or something else like a timing belt that's jumped a tooth.

Quality and not quantity counts.

Not Fuel Pump... Timing Belt!!!!

RON!!! You must be a psychic!!!! You said...

Before spending money on parts, I'd try the starter fluid, and then based on that you will know if it's only a fuel delivery problem, or something else like a timing belt that's jumped a tooth.

Well, tried the starter fluid... Nothing...

Pulled the top 4 bolts on the timing cover and... LOOSE (broken) Belt!!!

A bit relieved - fuel pump seemed like it would be a little hairy, BUT...seems like the timing belt will be more involved...

Okay.... now we need to shift emphasis on to the timing belt...

I have the timing belt, rented the power pulley puller for the crank...

I am going by the tech guides at kiatechinfo.com..

ANY INSIGHYTS< THOUGHTS EXPERIENCES OR SUGGESTIONS??? Thanks in advance...

before ripping it apart you don't need to remove the the crank pulley, there are a few more thing you should replace while you have it at torn apart,

1. water pump ( make sure it is for a DOHC count the cogs on yours and the replacement ) make sure you get the gasket also.

2. the tensioners and a new tensioner spring

3. upper and lower timing belt gaskets for timg belt cover if yours seem bad

4. a inlet gasket for termostat housing to engine side, I would also replace the termostat and it's gasket also.

have fun and just take it easy, it's best to replace things while it's apart, others will say the same thing, have a friend help, you'll need one when putting the timong belt ove the cam gears, to hold them in place.

one more thing kiatech does not go into details on replacement, it does not show all the steps needed to do the job, it is almost like shorthand, thats because the techs already know most of it, it is not meant for the backyard guys like us, so ask ?'s as you go or get stumped in areas
