Re: 2001 KIA Sportage 2WD Lack of power above 2500rpm

Problem: While under load or driving, the motor rev's up to about 2500-3000 and then labors to achieve any higher RPM, this occures hot or cold, resulting in not wanting to shift unless you let off the throttle, then after shitfting into the next gear does the same thing laboring @ 2500-3000 RPM and acting as if there is not enough horsepower to go much faster. Note: while not in gear the motor does rev up to 6000rpm with ease.
There are no codes, the Catalylic convertor and pre-catalytic convertor has been removed pressure/flow checked and had a driving test done with them removed which did not change the problem, the Cam sensor has been replaced, the fuel filter has been replaced and a pressure check done, meeting all spec's, pulled a Massflow from a good running 2001 Sportage and tested with no change. I have found no TSB;s regarding this issue.

The motor has 118,000 miles, the head was replaced @ 64,000 miles due to the fan clutch failing sending the fans blades through the radiator and allowing the motor to overheat; all in all the timing belt was replaced at that time, along with spark plugs, which have also been checked.

Have run out of parts to check or replace to resolve the problem.

So hows the transmission look? Fluid still red, not burnt, dark brown or contaminated? If you can put the vehicle on a lift and run it in gear, will it bog down?

The transmission was also recently serviced, fluid and filter change, and showed no discolored fluid or debris in the pan. The vehicle has been tested on the lift and does the same thing; It acts like its trying to pull a locomotive.

Amazing what can cause a problem!

THIS IS A MUST READ
Hopefully those of you who utilize this Website find the answers your looking for, Because I have now found the cause of my KIA SPortage's problem: After going to to 3 Dealers and being told the Catalytic Converter was the problem and that was the code that the scanner gave, (finding out there is no codes for the Catalytic Converter failure) and the Catalytic Converter and Pre-Catalytic would cost $960.00 plus labor by 2 of the Dealers. The 3rd Dealer agreed to Diagnose for $110.00 and resolve the problem; I received a call stating the Sportage was done and proceeded to the Dealer, to pick it up, well I paid them and took off in the Sportage and at 2500-3000rpm the vehicle labored and would not shift or go any faster. I returned the vehicle and the Dealer stated they had test drove the vehicle for more than 10 miles and it ran fine, I asked the Service Manager to take it out and test drive it on the Freeway. The Service Manager returned and agreed that he was not able to achieve more than 55 MPH and it took a while to get to that speed.
I am saying all of this simply because for 2 years this vehicle has been eating up insurance payments and was not able to be used for anything other than going to 7-11 around the corner.
The Final Dealers Mechanic which had been working on the Sportage, for 2 complete days, after Checking and rechecking all of the wiring, connectors and even removed the Catalytic Converter and test drove without it finally noticed an unusual thing: The hood insulation had the marking of the Air Intake in it, he cut the insulation out at that area which was being sucked into the opening and Guess What?
The Sportage runs like it did 2 years before, GREAT!!!!!
NOTE: the Dealer did not charge me any Additional fees.
