Removing struts from 09 Picanto

Hi,
I'm having trouble removing the struts from my '09 Picanto and I'd be glad to get some advice. The problem is with removing the top nut. To begin with it's hidden under a layer of bodywork making access difficult, and then when I turn the nut (assuming it's a right hand thread) the whole rubber mount turns as well. The nut is screwed onto the shaft of the shock absorber mounted below and this turns too; there seems to be no way to prevent this movenent.
There are two flats ground either side at the top of the shock absorber shaft, but these provide flats of 7mm and weren't sufficient to counter the torque required to loosen the 17mm nut.
The Kia technical manual say simply to "remove the nut" and give no more information on the subject, but if anyone out there has a solution for this task then I'd be glad to hear what you have to say.
Thank you !

Unhappy Lowering '09 Picanto

Hi, I am in the process of changing the springs to lower my 2009 Picanto. However, I can't figure out how to remove the struts; the nut at the top simply wont budge. The workshop manual isn't much help on this. It says "remove the upper mounting nut", and then refers to the "locking nut" that is attached to the end of the shock absorber shaft coming up from below. This locking nut is the only nut visible on my car and it won't separate from the shaft. It'll turn, but so too does the shaft of the shock absorber, and if the nut does eventually get removed then the springs below will be freed and suddenly lose their compression. I can't figure this one out and would appreciate some advice. Where am I going wrong ?
Thanks for any help on this subject.
