towing gas milage

I'm kind of disappointed with the gas milage I am getting while towing. What are you guys getting? I wonder if I can do something different. I am towing a 20' boat that with the trailer and gear weigh in at 3500lbs.

Truck is pretty stock with the exception of BFgoodrich all terrain tires.
Normally I get about 19mpg at 70mph and with the trailer it drops to 11mph in hot weather and 8.5mpg in weather below 32degrees F.
I have the 2009 borrego with the V6 and 55,000 miles.

Seems like a big drop. I think I am going to put in a K&N but is there anything else I can do. I find the truck does a poor job shifting while towing. The shifting also acts differently when using cruise control vs my foot.

The boat and trailer is within the towing capacity of your truck, but a 20' boat is causing high aerodynamic drag. Even more drag with lower temp (higher air density + heater use).

Try running at 50 MPH and test milage with and without the boat. Instead of a penalty of 8 MPG, you should get only 4 MPG less with the boat. Aerodynamic drag at 50 MPH is about half that at 70 MPH.

The auto trans. is doing its best, but you must expect some effect of the higher load.

so two suggestions... Slow down! is #1, speed kills mpg's while towing. Second is to keep it in manual shift mode, and watch the instant MPG's readout. The trans tends to shift a little early and hold the shift longer than needed, if you are shifting manually you can keep it in 5th longer. (be warned, you do risk the life of your trans by doing this, so I would suggest a temp gauge at least.)

I tow a 7' high,6' wide,16' long enclosed bike trailer - 1800 lb + -, same vehicle as you.

I usually get around 14-15 mpg at 70 depending on wind.

We tow a popup camper with our EX V6 and usually end up with 14-16 MPG but that's with keeping the speed under 60 mph. Fully loaded with supplies, people, and the camper we are adding around 4000#.

I tow a 29ft ultralight trailer ( 2014) fully loaded ~ 6000#'s. There is HUGE aerodynamic drag so mileage does suffer especially if you tow in the mountains . Baseline (no tow vehicle) I avg. 21+(computer reading) actual is 0.6mpg less.Summer towing ( temps < 90), grades flat, I get 14mpg at 60-65 MPH. If the temps over 90 then I lose another 1-3 mpg. Overall, I get 10.5-12.5 mpg., which (V8/AC/5-7 passengers), mileage is pretty impressive! Also I always tow in the shiftronic / autoshift mode. I prefer to elevate my shift points to about 3000 rpm and I hardly ever use 6th gear (unless the grades are flat or coming down expressway hills) so running in 5th gear offers an additional penalty. When I was towing my smaller trailer (about 4000#'s) with a more aerodynamic profile, I did get 14-16mpg, about 2 mpg higher...

I tow a 2010 Outback 210rs camping trailer with my 2WD Limited V8 and get betwen 11 and 8 MPG (varies based on terrain and wind conditions). The Outback is 4800lbs empty and i estimate around 6000 loaded with all my stuff. The big problem is the Outback sits up VERY high off the ground and is a very tall trailer because of it (10' 11"). I am sure it is this tall profile more than the weight that is killing my MPG (like pulling a billboard).

Other than sucking gas (but realistically, towing kills MPG with any vehicle except a large diesel) I can't complain about the Borrego as a tow vehicle. The V8 in my limited has plenty of power to handle the trailer.

mtbikerjg: How does your setup with the 29' trailer handle? I opted for the Outback travel trailer because it has a rear bed slide that keeps the length at 24' in towing configuration. I was concerned with towing a trailer approaching 30' with the Borrego as it has such a short wheelbase compared to other vehicles with a >7000 lb tow rating.
