ESC OFF/ Hill Descent Light

I am going to try my best to explain this, but I have attached a photo to help me:

Every so often, since March when I bought it, my Kia's Hill Descent Control (I think that's what it's called) and ESC OFF light will come on, at random times. Sometimes I will just start my Borrego, and they will come on, sometimes I will be driving and it will happen.

I do not push the ESC OFF button (and doing so when the light is lit does nothing to the light), and I don't push the Hill Descent Control button. (If I do push the HDC button normally the light is orange, not red like in the picture.) I don't have a lot of money to spend on repairs, and I am still under warranty. What I want to know is: would this be something covered under warranty? Has anyone else seen a Borrego do this? Thanks everyone!

Do you feel anything change in the braking/engine speed/etc? If not, then I would say that it's simply an electrical hiccup that should be covered under warranty (if you are within the 5 year 60k mile window).

The vehicle does act funny when it happens - it is harder to accelerate, and seems to shift harder. Also, if I am driving and the lights come on, the cruise control turns off (that is how I noticed it today). I guess I need to say that I have the V6, not the V8 - I know they have different transmissions, so I thought that would be worth saying, since the other threads seem to deal mainly with V8s.

I have had this same problem, but I have the V8. There is a TSB for the V8 where a major part in the transmission is replaced. Since you are experiencing the same symptoms on your V6, I wonder if it is not the part, but some electrical issue.

Pretty much everything but normal wear and tear is covered for the first 5 yrs 60k (power train to 10 yrs/100k). I even had my warped brake rotors replaced. Let the dealer diagnose and fix it. That is what you paid for.

To ease with some of the frustration that I forsee happening, Can you duplicate the problem regularly?

If so, take it in to the dealer, and If the 1rst owner there should be any problems with waranty. Second owner, I didnt see any miles mentioned, but we know its good with the years; so should be alright.

Otherwise, start logging the occurances that way when you take it to the dealer you can give them as much ammunition to solve the problme as possible. Electrical issues are never fun.

If it is the recall question then there shouldnt be any issue with getting it fixed. But I will admit this is the first I am hearing about a recall, unless its a software issue. (no parts required)

Even if it not warranty, The guys at the Kia tech line, that the dealer has access to are usually pretty on point, and with a competent tech, they will get it right.

Thank you all - I have almost 26200 miles now, and I will be calling the dealer tomorrow. I did buy the Borrego used (it had almost 21200 miles on it), so I know I don't have the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty, but looking at the manual (the way I read it) I should be fine warranty wise until 5 year/60000 miles.

I just didn't know if this issue would be covered under warranty, and thought I would ask here. I'll follow up once I know something. Thanks again!

My dealer called me Friday. The mechatronic module for my V8 tranny is in. I'm leaving the Borrego with them on Tuesday to swap out the part. I'll give a follow-up in a week of so...unless something bad happens before then. As far as I can tell, nobody in this forum has said they have had this done. The shift lever locking between Neutral and Drive plus the transmission staying in 3rd gear only happened before Kia replaced my transmission (just over 1 year ago). Lately though, the ESC and DTC lights have come on quite often and the dealer verfies the codes. The last time I took it in, the lights were on and the Service Advisor could see for himself. That's when they ordered the part. They also said they would supply a rental car for the day.

I am having this issue as well. It started well over a year ago but during early spring just stopped. Now it is coming on about every other time I drive it. Very frustrating...

As far as being able to duplicate it - no. It is too random of an issue.

You would think Kia or any car maker for that matter, would after attempting to fix a vehicle a certain number of time (and a certain amount of money), they would just replace the vehicle. At that point, they should sent the defective vehicle back to the factory where the engineers could figure out what went wrong and make sure it never happens to another vehicle. But I guess that makes way too much business sense.
