Borrego V8 DBC ghost

Hi all, new to the forum but have been watching it for a few months. Still don't see our issue, so here goes.
Our 2009 Borrego has spent more time at the dealer shop than in our garage. It has been back 7 times for the same issue. Since the day we drove the vehicle home, the DBC has engaged itself from cold starts. When this happens, the DBC button will not turn it off and the transmission locks. If I haven't noticed the DBC light prior to shifting into drive, shift control must be manually unlocked. If I catch it in "R", I have to shift back to park and restart the vehicle. First it was supposedly the gas cap, then they put a stabilizer on some wiring (goop), then field tech visited the dealer and replaced something else. Right before vacation it happened again, so dealer kept the vehicle, provided a rental for our trip and replaced the entire transmission ($9,500). Drove it almost a week and... of course, same issue again last night. We live in FL, no need for the DBC, park on level ground, have never actually engaged the DBC from the dash, it has a mind of it's own. After this last repair, there is also a rattle that seems to be coming from under the hood on the passenger side. Regional rep will be following up Wed, but I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this. I am at wits end with the time we have wasted with this problem.

Interesting, so they replaced the gas cap for an EVAP code. Not sure why they were worried about that compared to the DBC issue. They replaced the stop lamp switch, added stabilant to connectors, improved a ground and replaced the G sensor. Didn't see anything about a transmission replacement unless its still pending. I wonder why they haven't replaced the DBC switch or relay, maybe even looked into a short in the ESC control module. Seems more realistic to start there. Just a thought.

I would agree with switch/relay. Sounds like intermittent problem, which in many cases is hard to find.
I would check how sensitive is the switch to touch.

Do you talk/text and drive? Watch it. Very interesting test:

Will make these suggestions to Regional rep when she calls tomorrow. Tranny was replaced the week of the 4th, I received a call on the 11th telling me it was completed.

The gas cap was replaced after the second issue because the check engine light also came on. That has only happened once. Nothing else seems to happen when the DBC locks in. Literally, nothing. My rear camera goes blank as well. The third time I was actually in "D", so I was able to drive to the dealership (about 12 mi) and they could see that once in gear, it's not shifting without being released.

Thanks for the input.

Best of luck. Let us know the outcome. How upsetting/frustrating that must be!

Tonid,

There is another ghost out there, I have it. I have a 09 Ltd. as well. Our DBC light comes on fairly regularly. Let me see if the same things happen to you.

When our light comes on these 2 things occure:
1. The DBC comes on the speedometer display and is colored RED, not yellow. (The owners manual adresses this in a warning box on page 5/37.
2. ESC OFF light comes on.

Most of the time this happens when you start the vehicle. On this past Sunday, it happened when I put the vehicle in drive while waiting in line at a drive-thru. I put it back in park and restarted the Engine and it went away.

I also had a check engine light come on last week and the dealer said it was a small leak from not tightening the gas cap. (I know it was tightened till it clicked a couple of times.

The dealership did some firmware updates and said that should take care of it. Please keep me informed of your progress and the dealerships failures, and I will do the same.

Wasbritt,

Yes, the display goes red and the rearview mirror backup display disappears. (that's when I usually realize it has happened again.) I have not noticed the ESC light, but am usually so upset at the occurance that I can't see straight!

Sunday though, after the new tranny, I heard it. Sounded like something dropped out from under the hood. Shifted back into P, restarted and it was gone. I have had it take a couple of restarts to go away, but usually the restart works.

Out of all the times it happened, only one time I can recall it wasn't on startup.

Materski, you have no idea how frustrating! When we go shopping we'll leave the store and my daughter asks "what car do we have?" We've been in rentals more than our Borrego. I really love the car, but am very nervous about the interaction between the DBC and the transmission. I was originally told there was none - the DBC controls the brake. Obviously, that isn't true or they wouldn't have replaced the transmission! (something about signals not coming back from the trans sensor that is located within the unit. (Pascoworld will probably understand that) I am also concerned with the rattle that came with the new transmission. Never heard it before.

I'll update after speaking to regional tomorrow.

Makes sense, they probably haven't submitted the claim until they really figure out whats going on. When the DBC is activated, the ESC controls the brakes and brake light switch. The transmission is probably controlled over the CAN network. Just trying to think this out logically. Your input is the DBC switch, ESC receives all the necessary data from multiple sensors and controls the outputs (brake lights, transmission speed). So it seems more likely a switch is at fault, but thats my opinion. When they figure this out, its probably going to be something simple. Best of luck tomorrow.

Consumer affairs analyst did not call today. I left a message on her voicemail. Warned her the problem is still there, so maybe she will escalate it to a supervisor before she calls me back, instead of reading from her script.

I would like to point out that my dealership has been wonderful about this. Once the regional office got involved it became KIA's problem. Dealer has been online with KIA technical several times and done everything they were told to do. Only one time did the issue occur when mechanics were test driving. That is when they received the error code that pointed them toward the transmission.

I am encouraged that only one other Borrego owner is reporting the issue (at least here). You just know it will be something simple since replacing the transmission didn't work.

I have had this happen to me about 3 times recently in the spring. Always on startup in the morning. I park on a bit of a grade with the front of the truck on the downhill side so maybe that has something to do with it? The remedy for me is as metioned already, just put it in park and restart it. I also wonder if the weather has something to do with it, as it only happened in the spring?
