Air conditioning problem.

Hello, I have now owned my Borrego for over a year, and 17-18k miles. Things have generally gone well but.

The AC is slow to cool, and doesn't do much of anything at idle. It does work FAIR on the highway. The compressor has always been noisy. Has a pretty obvious constant whine that sounds out of place. Kind of been expecting it to fail but it keeps hanging on. Low side pressure is quite high at idle (like 60+).
Would it be wise to replace the compressor preemptively? If not, what else do I need to look at?

Not sure if you have the V6 or V8. But I have the V8 and did experience a similar problem. The key is to recharge the AC gas with 1.66 LB. This is way more than the typical car, which is roughly 1.2 LB.
Also I believe that the Borregos have a design issue and the fan is not powerful enough to handle overall refrigeration while idling. Actually, when I am idling, the engine starts to overheat after 5-10 min. When the car drives, the forced air coming thru the front cools down everything. The issue is worst while towing, in bumper to bumper conditions, I need to turn the heating on to cool off the engine a bit. Radiator is fine, thermostat is fine, fluids are fine, I believe is a design problem, but again just my opinion.

Thanks for getting back with me. Hard to get much feedback since these things are so uncommon.
Yes, it's the v8.
Interesting you mention the cooling issues -- I was speculating recently that maybe the fan clutch is worn out. But I doubted that because the temp gauge never changes, it's always at ~1/2.

I am beginning to suspect my condenser fan motor because I can never see/hear it running -- but it's difficult to nail down because I'm not sure when it's SUPPOSED to run.

I guess I will have to take the bumper cover off and direct wire it to see if it runs at all.

Checking the fan motor won't hurt, but I bet you are low on freon. Vacuum and recharge with 1.66 pounds. Don't use those cheap cans available at Walmart. From my experience you need a shop that has the vacuum machine and can add the exact amount of refrigerant.
I just came back from a 4,000 miles trip to East Canada towing a 6000lb trailer, 3 kids, wifey and a dog and the truck was spectacular, got 12-13 MPG, very happy with my 130K miles Borrego!

My V8 condenser fan
My V8 condenser fan went out on me. You will need to remove the front bumper and grill in order to replace it. Before you do, you can connect 12V to its connector. The 12V supply connector for the fan is located just behind the radiator near the top and to the right of the radiator cap. You can see the fan blade looking through the grill. I believe it is triggered by the engine temperature because I’ve seen the fan on even when the AC is not running.
