There's many DIY's novices that have accomplished intricate tasks with guidance form members here, but without the detailed history it too would involve a lot of guessing, and that has typically cost more in the end.

Because we don't even know the mileage, we can only assume that the Kia quote took this into account, and in that case it would be your best option.

Sorry, it has 111000 roughly miles. EXTREMELY Poorly maintained. Honestly, other than past due oil changes she probably did NOTHING.

I might as well include the dealer write up as well.

Poorly maintained and that mileage, your best bet would most likely be a complete engine rebuild (not just chains and tensioners) - you could get Kia to do an assessment and then decide whether its viable to spend $3.2K now and then an engine rebuild in the not too distant future.

Its really not a viable option at this point. she owes about another year of payments on the car. Oddly.. It drives very good and she only goes 5 miles to work, But Massachusetts emissions wont give her a sticker with that code. we just need it to pass one more year till its paid off. LOL Guess that ship has sailed.

In my search for that code I found this.. https://www.engine-codes.com/p0018_kia.html

Dirty Oil Low engine oil level
Faulty Valve Timing Control (VTC)
Valve Timing Control (VTC) harness is open or shorted circuit.
Valve Timing Control (VTC) circuit poor electrical connector
Incorrect timing Engine mechanical problems Damaged Engine Control Module (ECM)

I appreciate you guy's help. I guess the reason I thought that Variable Timing Solenoid would be part of the problem is because if I'm not mistaken besides its looks it does play a roll in the above items. But I really dont know.

BTW... her car has all these symptoms. https://www.yourmechanic.com/article...g-vvt-solenoid

As stated before..You need to start at BASE MECHANICAL components FIRST then move on to sensors. Electronics can only adjust for so much mechanical wear. The dealer has already informed you of where a problem lies in the timing chains, and they are a weak point in these motors. But good wishes to you if you think better.

I get what your saying. But isn't the Variable Timing Solenoid also a mechanical component? Not to mention one that has been abused by poor maintenance for such a long time. why replace a failing heart when its the valves to the heart thats clogged no?

VTC is an aux. for timing advance and retard, it sends signal to the ECM that provides that change.IT WILL throw its own code for that specific part if it is not seeing correct info that works with other sensor inputs. ...But do as you will and throw parts and money at it in HOPES of fixing it, instead of finding the actual fault through proper diagnostic procedures.

If it was only the VVT code without the reported noise, it could point to a fouled Solenoid.

If you're confident that you could clean the solenoids then give that a try, but if that Kia dealership has a good reputation then I'd go with their diagnostics and recommendation.
