Question Cabin air filter

Does anyone know how to unlatch the glove box door to get at the cabin air filter. I want to start changing it myself. I asked the service adviser at my KIA dealership but he said that I could break the tabs if I did it wrong and would not show me how to do it.

It's in your owners manual. When you pull the tabs towards you (step 2), you need the glove box to be slightly tilted back towards the dash or the tabs will hit the stops inside and won't let them slide. I put a flat screw driver under the front of the tab to lift it while I pulled it towards me, but don't lift the tabs too high or you may break them.

Smile Cabin Air Filter

Thank you "HaVasaPaPa".

My owners manual does not have that information printed in it. There is the title for checking the filter but the instructions are not there. When I called Kia Canada they said that they do not recommend that owners try and do this themselves because there is a chance they will break some of the parts.

They want you to have a service technician perform the work. (There is a service charge for this).

Sorry about the owners manual thing. I sent the picture from my Hyundai Genesis, which has the exact same installation as the Borrego. Hyundai owns a good portion of Kia, although they operate as separate companies.

Kia does charge a labor fee. Call your dealer and ask what the cost for changing the cabin air filter and ask what part if the price is labor. It'a an easy job. Maybe your dealer would do it for only the cost of the filter just to keep your business. Unless they are the only Kia dealer in the area and know you can't go elsewhere.

The filter should be changed every 15,000mi (24,000km) or each year, whichever comes first. More often if driven in dusty conditions.

As a recommended extra charge at an oil change the Service Adviser quoted $50 for filter and labor. I had checked the day before and Advance Auto Parts had the filter for $17 which is still high in my opinion since you can buy a much larger air filter for $10. Needless to say I figured out how to change the filter myself.

I changed the inside cabin air filter myself a couple of months ago. Purchased the filter on line and followed the direction in the manual to switch it out. Not rocket science, for sure.

What I'm kicking myself for is allowing myself to overpay these grease monkeys all these years to do something I could have done myself. And, to add insult to injury, I notice that one of retaining tabs was already broken, no doubt done by one of these helpful mechanics. Thanks for breaking it for me, buddy. Appreciate it.
