Opinions, please. Should this be covered under the warranty? Dealer says no.

Hi,

I have a 2015 Forte LX with less than 15k on it.

My elbow has worn a spot through the armrest cover.

Is there any way to post a photo of if so you can see what I'm talking about?

Anyway, I asked the dealership if the damage was covered under the warranty and was told no, it was normal "wear and tear."

I told the service rep that I was almost 70 years old, have owned a lot of cars and have never worn a hole through an armrest cover. I was wearing a short sleeve shirt and he told me I had "kinda pointy elbows." Idiot.

Do you think Kia should cover this?

Thanks

IMO I would think it could be possibly be a defect with the material on the arm rest or possibly some oily substance contaminated the material . I would talk to the service manager nicely and see if he will take care of it and the service rep is an idiot. I am also 70 and i have never worn a hole in an arm rest.

(I was a US Air Force Paralegal who worked in Claims several years reviewing claims for damage to household goods and vehicles during moves.)

From your point of view: Yes, that looks like they used inferior quality material. Armrests should definitely not wear that much in 15K miles in normal use. Maybe a "bad batch" from a supplier?

From your dealer's point of view: (Photo 2) The hole appears to be a perfect circle. Very odd. If it was your elbow, it may be a somewhat circular area, but not a perfect circle - unless perhaps you have a prosthetic arm. If that is the case, you would need to talk to Kia customer relations and explain. They might listen. There also appears to be an inverted "V" patch of wear and also a section that looks like tape or something similar was covering and protecting a small area. Was a strong cleaner used that ate through the vinyl?

Did you have anything taped or attached to the armrest? Did you use any type of cleaner on the armrest?

I can see how you can argue inferior materials, but I can also see where Kia can argue abnormal use. Tough call.

I just bought a 2016 Forte with 29,000 miles on it and the armrest looks like it just came out of the factory. No way would just using an elbow make that much damage in 15,000 miles. My prior truck had 170,000 on it and the armrest was in almost new condition and I used it all the time. I am 71 years old. The circle of damage is too perfect to be caused by an elbow. If nothing else was taped on the armrest or no chemicals were used on it, then I would contact kia directly with the pictures to see if I could get some help with them.

If they give you too much of a hassle do a search on "car-part.com" for a Forte of the same year, model, and color for a used door panel...It might not be listed so call a few local yards and explain what you want... Most interior parts end up going to the crusher when all the mechanical parts have been removed/sold and a whole panel on a damaged door they would sell for more profit.

Replacing a whole door panel is not very hard.,..
