2009 Kia Spectra noise when steering

Hi All!

I have a 2009 Kia Spectra (FWD Automatic 2.0L engine 184,000 miles) that is making a noise when you barely turn the wheel to the right as you are traveling down the road (as if you are making a lane adjustment/correction). The noise does not happen when you barely turn left. It happens at all speeds. The noise sounds like light hum/lathe machining (almost tool chatter) noise. The sound is coming from the driver's side (left) and can feel a slight vibration in the gas pedal when the noise is happening. I did replace the front sway bar links and the passenger (right) tie rod end because I found them rather loose and could be turned by hand (plus they made a clunking noise while going over bumps). The noise started about a week after I made that repair (not sure if it's related to that repair or not). I have not gotten an alignment on it yet. The noise does not go away if I push on the brakes.

I thought the noise could be the rotor backing/splash guard falling apart from rust rubbing against the rotor (I live in Northern Ohio where we get lots of snow so we get rusty cars). I pulled them off on both the front left and right sides since they were almost gone and to rule out them rubbing against the rotor (that didn't help). The drive shafts seem tight with no play in them. Rotors and brake pads were replaced about 6-8 months ago and are still in good condition. The left tie rod end is nice and tight and hasn't been replaced.

I cannot think or figure out what would be causing the noise. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Brian!

Try checking out the front wheel bearings! Lots of threads about that common for age and mileage, in fact I just did L & R front bearings on our 09 this summer!

I thought of that after I posted the thread and while looking at a couple of other forums. I'll look into it and see what comes of it. Sucks not having a garage in the winter time but luckily my brother-in-law who lives a mile away is nice enough and lets me use his huge garage to work on my cars.

Did you do them yourself or take it to a mechanic?

Of course for me, I do 99.95% all work myself. But I grew up as an auto tech. You can save some bucks by removing the steering knuckles yourself and having a shop press out the old and press in the new bearings and drive flange. Get the bearing with new drive flange and lock ring, it's BEST done that way. OR if you don't want to have it tying up your BIL's garage too long, let a shop do the job.
