7/25/18 UPDATE:
Well the spectra is sitting at 127k miles now Synth. oil change is working well. BUT daughter was home for an afternoon and said things didn't seem right with the steering, and was making a noise(growling) and thought was from the R rear.
Well I looked the car over and sure enough it was a R front wheel bearing going bad! Done LOTS of the type design for other makes(press in 1 piece bearing), so early next week will be doing that job for her. Just odd that it is this far bad sounding in less than 2k miles of use, as I test drove her car after doing the oil change and all was good. She is doing MINIMAL driving till I can get to the task, as she is 50 miles from home now having moved out on her own!

08/01/18 UPDATE:
OK so after starting the RF wheel bearing replacement on 07/31, I finally am finished with the task there! I did it "on the car" with my tooling that I have had for other cars with this type 1 piece press in bearing. NY RUST was horrible down to removing the snap ring retainer! We shall see how this holds up...this turned into a job that even I would not want to do again!
Much quieter ride and steering is not "wonky" anymore. BUT there is a slight bearing hum when making curves in the road. I suspect that another bearing position is going bad also. BUT am TOO "wrung out" to check further, AND have to deliver the car back to the daughter later today!

BUT ....Looks like I am going to be doing the LF bearing soon also! Not bad for noise but it can be heard,at least there isn't a bunch of "wobble" from the ball bearings like the RF had! Car is back with daughter and she is going to check her work schedule and weekend plans for being able to give it up again for the next bearing work and a NY State Inspection!

Well, Looks like the weekend of the 18th this month will be the work time to do the LF bearing. daughter has the Saturday off and has the Monday off also and will come out and spend the weekend here! Then a Monday morning appt. for NY annual inspection, all is good otherwise and just a "formality" to get the new sticker!
At least there is NOT a speed sensor in the LF knuckle to worry about unlike the RF one, which I could not get to budge when doing that bearing!

Well the LF axle bearing got replaced yesterday afternoon, Went quicker and smoother than the RF did. Got it's annual inspection, with flying colors and was delivered back to the daughter 50 miles away. Was a nice comfortable and QUIET ride.
The little car is doing OK for 128 k miles on it!

Glad you got the Spectra fixed and inspected

Now you got me worried...My 2008 Spectra SX has 120k on the odometer but is quiet for the time being

Just finished a 2014 Optima LX for my wife...Another "salvage" car... It has 51k on it and I bought it for $2250 and found most nose parts at the Cleveland pull-a-part off of a 2011... We have $3500 including painting the hood and bumper cover in a 4 year old car that looks like it was just built ...Not bad...

So that is why you have been MIA for a while...LOL! Hope the "new" Optima serves you well.
Front axle bearings going bad does NOT "surprise" or anger me on ANY FWD auto...it happens, especially in our rust belt area. Most bearings that I have done though in the past and with our Neon, the bearing comes out from the knuckle from the drive flange side. NOT so with the Spectra, just the opposite and makes things a bit more awkward to do. Daughter was not home at the time we delivered the car, so waiting to hear from her of the noticeable ride noise REDUCTION.
When all this started happening, she was asking if it was time to "trade it in"...I told her that as long as I can do the labor, and parts are cheap enough that the body and suspension seem to be in good shape for another few years..IF the RUST GREMLINS don't start attacking too harshly!

Now I'm working on my Daughter's Gold 2008 Hyundai Sonata... We got it 3 years ago right around Christmas.. It was "T" boned on the driver's side and both doors and the rear quarter panel damaged... Because it was winter I threw two burgundy doors on it with a lot of washers to shim the doors out so she could drive it... The passenger fender was also damaged ... It had only 38k miles on it.. (it now has 56k Miles) Well time has passed (she couldn't live without her Sonata) and it needs some TLC.... Rear tire leaks, door locks have problems, and it badly needs the oil changed (10k miles on conventional oil)... She's 120 miles from home in Columbus, Ohio and on her own trying to pay off her student loans ($80,000) and has little money to spare...

This Monday I by chance found a Gold 2008 Sonata at my local "pull-a-part" with two perfect driver's side doors, and also the passenger fender... I also found the driver's side door sill and the "B" pillar covering... So I'm in the process of making her Sonata pretty once again... My willow tree and a cable winch has the B pillar back where it should be... Now I'm gonna start on the rear quarter panel just behind the rear door tomorrow and replace the burgundy doors with the gold ones... I have all read replaced the fender with the gold one so the passenger side is perfect once again... I only have three more cars to work one after I finish her car...

So I am sorta busy
Dave

Well good wishes for your daughter! Seems mine is in a similar position with college loan repayments! I will do most anything mechanically on cars to get and keep things running right, BUT beyond hanging a door or fender type body piece...I detest doing body work!
I did get thanks from my daughter the other day about the last work being done...Said it was a much more pleasant sounding ride home from her "high stress" employment and didn't need to crank up the audio volume to hear her relaxation tunes during her short 10 minute drive! $50.00 for parts was A LOT cheaper than to have a dealer or shop up there do the job! YES she pays for needed parts, but I always try and get them at the best prices, unless in a HAVE TO bind!

Here in the USA, it is the start to the Labor Day weekend(TGIF)! Daughter will be coming home for the holiday when done work on Sat. This will give me (as a watchful over cars dad) a chance to "look things over" on the little Spectra. NO calls of complaints from her, but I'm SURE that at least the washer bottle will need REFILLING again!...LOL
