Unhappy Tail lights are not working.

[FIXED, read the bottom comment]

I currently have a 2004 Sedona (from Canada) and I'm having a problem with it.
I was driving at night and someone informed me that my tail lights were not working.

The break lights, head lights, dash board lamps and signal lights work, but the tail light does not work. I already replaced the lights for the tail lamp, but it didn't work.

After a lot of research, I've found out that the DRL might be the problem. I have spent days on the computer searching for solutions for the DRL, but none of them are for my model.

I also opened the fuse box in the engine compartment and put an extra fuse in the EXT socket (the fuse that protects the DRL, License lamp, tail lamp, etc) and the everything worked perfectly. Before I put the fuse in the EXT socket, there was (originally) a black piece of rubber in the socket.

Should I put the fuse in the EXT socket, or would damages occur to my car? I can't find the DRL module on my model, either.

How can I get my tail lights to work again without damaging my car?

...

Not to resurrect this thread from the dead, but I also just experienced this today. Removed the rubber bit covering the EXT slot, put in a 10A fuse, and it works (again). I'm in (Western) Canada as well.

Odd.

I'll look into a DRL module, just in case. People have mentioned that this is a known issue - I haven't seen any other threads, can anyone direct me to them?

Thank you.

Excuse my ignorance but what does DRL stand for?

Sorry about the bump, but I would like to give some advice for people who have this problem in the future. This is how I fixed the issue.

After putting the extra fuse in the EXT socket, it worked well (this is one solution). I tried find the problem in the DRL for fun, and opened up the console box (this is the second solution).

The console box. Not near the glove box.

This is the DRL module.

This is where I had to resolder. You can probably tell where it is for you.

I found the DRL and found out that the problem is not major. I disassembled the DRL and found that it was a soldering problem. Just solder it again and pop it back in and it worked perfectly.

Don't waste money on just replacing the DRL module; it is very expensive ($285 from the dealer, and of course the labour cost). If you are considering to replace the DRL, try and fix it first. Hope this helped you.

Thank you, ESKORT27, for the great advice. Finally fixed it.

I can't explain it, but I but a fuse in place of the rubber thingy and now my tail lights work.

Hi all
Great job with the pics.
Wish I would have found your thread a week ago. Just went through the exact same procedure with our 2003 Sedona. For those wondering about the fuse fix as in option one. Installing a fuse in the EXT position bypasses the tail light relay inside the DRL unit. The point that you are bypassing when doing this is actually the bad solder joint explained in option 2 fix. The EXT fuse is originally installed on USA Sedonas that do not have DRL units.

My question is for SAM9082. Now that you have your DRL unit repaired, do your tail lights come on when your DRLs are on? Mine do and every print that I look at is telling me they should. Can you confirm this for me?

Where exactly IS the DRL mdoule?

This thread is a wonderful find at a timely moment, as my rear lights quit too!
I followed the details as best as i could - took the console apart - but couldn't locate the DRL anywhere. I read in another thread that it's supposed to be lurking in there somewhere but couldn't see anything resembling the black rectangular box in the pics.

Unfortunately I picked up on "option 1" *after* I had the dash apart - sure call me slow, lotsa evidence in that regard - which is actually not such a bad thing as I do have a burnt out light in the radio so I can address that... so i now have rear running lights!

But the DRL module is still elusive. I would really like to take care of that detail. Any further details that can be shared on its location?

Thanks,

Taz

Having Same Problem

My girlfriend is having the same exact problem with her 2005 Sedona as discussed by Sam 9082 at the top of this page: all rear lights working perfectly, except for the tail lights. I have replaced the EXT fuse and checked the TNS relay. But still no go. I have not tried the soldering thing with the DRL yet. However, I want to eliminate all possibilities before going there. I have also heard the problem might be a ground contact. Any ideas before I pick up the soldering iron?
