P0990 & P0885 code - Kia Shop Said I need a PCM

I've been getting P0990 & P0885 codes on my 2006 Kia Sedona. The car's transmission goes into safe mode which gets stuck in 3rd gear. Funny thing is, it happens only when it's cold out (live in North East, LI, NY). I've tried to troubleshoot the problem myself without success (looked for a rubbed wire, Speed output and input sensor). Finally broke down and brought it into the dealer (still has powertrain warrantee). They had my car all day (Friday) for diagnostics and they told me the transmission solenoid switch in the tranny is not getting power, but they are still testing and need to keep my car another day. Monday morning they called and said I need a PCM $1460.08 .

Anyone have similar problems?
If I buy a used a used one for $75.00, do you think they would reprogram my VIN #?
Should I try and crack the PCM open and check for cold solder joints?

Hi Mike...
Are you sure it's a PCM? Probably an ECM (with the TCM included).
If you buy a used ECM they will probably cost around $70.00

The car's VIN doesn't have to be reprogrammed unless your state requires it during emissions inspection.. It should run the engine and tranny OK as-is...
Possibly a copy of the invoice from the salvage yard or from ebay may do to satisfy the inspection place...

Thanks for the Speedy Reply

Thanks for the speedy reply. The dealer is telling me it's the PCM. Look at what I found on ebay ( 06 Kia Sedona PCM Computer | eBay ), it looks like the same part. The seller says most PCM's will have to be re-programmed. How would I know if NY requires the VIN for emission inspection?

I just pickup my car and they told me my ground wires were good, but the PCM is not sending power to pin 20. They said the PCM is VIN encrypted. If I purchase one from them, the warehouse puts my VIN in PCM before they ship to me.. I found this hard to believe. They listed part number 39110-3c460.

Dave, you were right, Ebay shows part as ECM.

I still don't know if the VIN encryption will not allow the used ECM to work properly in my car.
Any suggestions?
