You will not break anything by putting them in the oven. If you left them in there for a really long time, well that is another story. Using a heat gun increases the chance of melting the plastic in spots plus the mastic can cool in the time it takes to go all the way around the headlight. I have done three sets now with no problem. this mod has been done by many people. If you bake take the bulbs out first. There is a how to for this over on Streetkiaz.

augmenting any part of the headlights is a bad idea. you may not realize it but every part of the headlight is designed for maximal illumination. painting the chrome will alter the beam pattern, your visibility at night, the visibility of the road at night and the DOT approval. BAD IDEA.

Talking My spectra headlights

Here's what I did. I made my own "oven" out of a large box and my heat gun to unseal the headlight assembly. Made sure ALL areas of reflector to be painted was thoroughly rubbed down with fine steel wool. I used a UV enamel auto spray paint in three different coats and made sure a good 2 coats of a clear gloss UV protectant was on top of that. I think it turned out well. See pics. !!
