Trunk light/ Trunk open dashboard light

I am not sure where to post this but here it goes. Please be kind for I had a bad weekend. ( 2013 kia Rio Signal Red)

Friday night while stopped at a redlight a truck hit me hard enough to send my car completely threw the intersection. He was not even trying to stop. He fled the scene. he did damage to the rear bumper, the lights over the licence plate popped out and the trunk will not close and the lock is busted. I had to duct tape it shut for now. I was able to get it closed enough to where the trunk is about a 1/2 to 3/4 inch open. I could not get it closed any more.

My question is will ( or does) the trunk light shut off on its own after a set period of time. I know the dashboard light is on but I do not know what is going on inside the trunk obviously. The car is still driveable but I cannot take it in the shop yet. ( long story) and I am concerned about the battery draining. it is 2 days later and the car starts fine but until I can take it to the shop should I run the car a little bit every day to keep battery charged? i want to avoid removing all the tape just to remove the bulb. we just had a snow so the car is too wet to re-tape up

Thank god I was wearing my safety belt and i am surprised i walked away unhurt.

Yes the light will stay on. You can manually close the latch instead of having the striker close it.

I have no idea what you mean? What is a striker? I close my trunk with my two hands like everyone i ever known does it.

it was a collision which bends your frame/trunk/bumper. It will not close due to the impact and the damage to the body. the lip of the trunk ( who knows what its called) appears at a glance to be completely closed but the sides are raised up about a inch. The damage from the collision probably bent the frame enough so it will not close totally.

I tried to peek into that 1 inch rise in the trunk and all looks dark but then again its hard to tell. its kinda like trying to see the refrigerator light shut off lol

Oh ok, so you can't get the lift gate open due to the damage? The striker is the piece mounted on the body of the vehicle that the latch grabs on to. If you open your door and look at the latch you will notice a hook like piece. This is what turns and wraps around the striker. I was just suggesting manually closing that so your light will shut off but it may be difficult if you can't get the lift gate open.

I Don't think I'm being understood the trunk is open, lock is busted. . I can not close the trunk because of the collision. It will not close all the way so I have it duct taped. Since I can not fully close it and the lock is busted. I am worried that the trunk light will not shut off. My question is will the battery saver function turn the trunk light off automatically after a period of time

Why don't you simply remove the bulb?

Problem solved. It can't still be snowing and the trunk lid wet, is it? As far as asking whether it will shut off after a certain period of time, did you go back to the car after it's parked about an hour and look? And if you can't see it in the daytime, it DOES get dark occasionally where you live, doesn't it?
