Wink Just bought a brand-new 2019 Sportage EX

The lease was up on our 2015 Optima, a beautiful Titanium LX. We put 33,000 miles on it, and really enjoyed it. Got it when I was a Parts Manager for a Kia dealership in Mass. just before I left to go back to the aftermarket parts business.

We thought about another Optima, but she recently had the chance to drive a Nissan Rogue for a few days, and got hooked on the SUV height and size, so we started looking at the Sorrento (too big!) and then the Sportage. It has the 2.4 that has an admirable track record for the most part.

Thursday night of this week, we took delivery of an AWD Hyper Red EX with the Premium Package. We mostly wanted the heated seats and steering wheel, and the Panoramic Roof.

Being that it was late, we didn't bother the salesman for the walk-through, and now realize we should have, because we are pouring through the owners manual trying to sort things out! First of all, I didn't realize that these cars no longer come with a CD player! I have to figure out what to do with the dozen or so favorite CDs we carry with us! (Hey, I'm a 63 year old geezer who has gotten this far without MP3 players! lol)

Secondly, I have no idea how where the remote rear hatch release is, or if there even IS one .. I can't believe a $31,000 EX doesn't have a remote hatch release somewhere in the cabin. We press the button on the key fob, and nothing happens! Apparently there is no remote fuel door release either? You are supposed to push in the gas cap door and it opens?

Moral of the story is: TAKE THE WALK-THROUGH WTH YOUR SALESMAN!!!!

We aren't new to Kia, but we are new to the Sportage

Hi Rich.
I bought a used 2017 Sportage EX last Sept, I had a really good salesman and he showed me a lot when inspecting the car and during the test drive. But I also did the delivery inspection with him and at my request went off to find windshield washer fluid to top thing up (was almost empty). I had a few days from the time I bought the car to the time I took delivery, during that time, I downloaded the user manual online and read as much as I could.
I'm 60 years of age and was also surprised with the lack of a CD player..... but I'm into computers, if you have a computer, you can do a search for Audio CD ripper programs (there are some free ones out there), and use that to convert your CD collection to MP3 and then copy them over to a USB stick and use it in your Sportage, there's even a way of copying the songs you want to the internal memory of the entertainment system (I have the Harmon Cardon system).
So far I am very much enjoying this vehicle, I don't do that much driving but it's nice to do it in some level of comfort as compared to econo boxes I've had in the past! LOL
I hope you get much enjoyment from your Sportage once you learn all the tips and tricks to using all it's features.
Take care

Regards: Jack

Hi Rich,

We are new owners of a 2019 Sportage SX. AWD, turbo, black cherry, tan interior. My first foreign vehicle. I am very impressed with the build quality. Plus the turbo motor makes some stump pulling torque!

There is a button on the dash, lower left, by your knee cap. The rear hatch button has to be held until the rear hatch is up at least half way. There are some other buttons in the same area that turn on and off some functions.....

If you lock your car the gas door locks as well. Not sure why, but it is what it is. Yes, push the door to open it, but car must be unlocked.

Lots of bells and whistles on these vehicles. Many are safety related so good to have. BTW. when you lock your vehicle the mirrors will fold in. Then out when unlocked. Have fun exploring your new vehicle!

As far as music....Yep, I'm in the same boat.
Buy a thumb drive, a short one. Use your lap top to 'rip' music from your cd's to the thumb drive. Use the Steve Jobs software from Apple. Its free. It only took me ~ 30 minutes to copy 7 cd's to the thumb drive.
The quality of ripped music is not as good as as the original cd, but its better than nothing.....You can do it. I'm 64.

If you have a smart phone you can listen to music from it via bluetooth and Pandora. Caution...you eat data this way, just what the phone company wants...

Hi Lou.....
Actually you can get some pretty decent sounding MP3, when ripping change the bitrate setting to a higher number, I believe most will default to 128, try 192 and see if that sounds better. The higher the bitrate you use, the larger the MP3 files will become due to less compression.

If you're using a PC (Microsoft based) the Windows Media Player will do the ripping job rather nicely, without investing or downloading any other software (and you can select bit rates as high as 300+). Stick/thumb drives are cheap (for our cars you must us USB 2.0, not 3.0), so I have a couple with different genres of music on each.

I been using the same thumb drive with about 4000 songs on it for the last 4 cars I have owned. Its the best way to listen to music in my opinion. The Kia has a nice indexing system that lets you play folders, titles, albums, etc.

Rich,

The internal rear hatch button that Lou O. mentioned operates the powered hatch, which is only available on the EX with the technology package. Without that package there is no internal hatch release. The hatch can be unlocked (not unlatched) by unlocking the doors, by pushing the rear hatch button on the Smart Key or by simply walking up to the hatch with the Smart Key in your pocket. To unlatch and open the hatch, you need to depress the button above the license plate and lift manually.

Question for the OP: Do you have a smart phone? Put your ripped music and other MP3's on that device rather then a thumb drive. Ie; I have an Apple phone and have put thousands of songs over the years via iTunes on various Apple phones I have had. Play them using Carplay that you have on your EX.

Mr Jobs did not give me an option during the ripping sessions to adjust the bitrate. I'm sorry I missed that somehow because the quality is really substandard. If I ever get bored and have some extra time perhaps I will try again....Thanks for the tip!

When you arrive at the filling station and get out of the car, the gas door is unlocked. You press on the rear edge and release so it 'pops' and you can pull it open. Just press it closed when you're done. When you lock the car later it will lock too, although for anyone determined to get into it, all they need is anything to pry with - its just a little plastic bolt.
If you have 'Smart Liftgate', it will drive you crazy walking around the vehicle with your keys on you. You can disable it on the center info panel and it will still obey the fob commands.
