Oh, I see what you mean. A previous commenter was asking what it was made out of, I don't think the parts diagram gives that information. I'm supposed to be picking it up today, I'll ask again, probably get a different answer.

Car has been in the shop for almost 2 weeks, still no answer from Kia or the dealer. Pretty sure I won't ever be buying a Kia vehicle again.

They did after a few days, but the lack of information from them is very frustrating. I've called a few times, and just gotten the "we're working on it" answer. You'd think after 2 weeks they would have some sort of answer other than that, but what do I know.

My service experience has been abysmal and I certainly won't be buying another Kia vehicle again. First they tried to blame this problem on not having the oil changed with them (a $40-50 visit) then they said there wasn't any noise, then the noise was normal, then it was the tensioner, then the computer, and now it's taken them 7 business days to ship something via UPS/FedEx? Unless it went back to Korea, I could have driven it to Kia and back in less time.

I'm expecting to get the vehicle back and the problem still be there, and then another 3-4 days in the shop to replace the tensioner. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I won't be surprised to get back in the car, pull onto the road outside the dealer and have the exact same noise occur.

Is the following item relevant?

Kia has issued a Technical Service Bulletin to its dealership network detailing the steps necessary to inspect and potentially replace engines on a number of its 2013 Rio subcompacts.

At fault is a defective timing chain and guide, which could create a clattering sound as it essentially chews up the inside of an engine. Instead of repairing the faulty timing chains and guides, a TSB released last month indicates that Kia wants its dealers to entirely replace the engine sub assembly and long block.

My vehicle isn't a 2013 MY, so I don't know if it applies to my situation, however:

EDIT: The tensioner replacement apparently solved the problem, hopefully this situation is over. I'll report back after I pick up the car if I'm able to reproduce the noise.

Post Pickup Edit: The tensioner replacement appears to have solved the problem, I've not been able to replicate the noise under the same conditions as before, and the car is not longer surging when under load. Hopefully my problem is solved.

A new problem has appeared recently, there is a rattling sound coming from the driver's side air vent that is effected by the speed of the AC system. Probably not worth bringing up.

Final edit: To the previous poster, the tensioner is metal, not plastic.

I might be having a similar issue with my 2012 Rio sedan with 29k miles.

I was driving to work today on the highway at about 65mph. All of a suddenly I started losing acceleration. The car also was making different levels of rattling/vibration noise. At highway speeds, I even shifted manually to 4 or 5 and I didn't get much power out of it. There are no idiot lights on or anything.

I limped it to work (About 6 miles). At a stop, I didn't hear anything...it sounded normal. But once trying to accelerate, the noise was noticeable and didn't accelerate fast.

The dealer it was towed to said they don't know what the issue is and they need to have the division parts manager approve or something prior to them beginning to work on the car. They said I would not have it for at least the weekend and they don't know how much longer. This sounds strange to me.

Also, what is with Kia not providing a rental when under warranty either?! That's what Kia Assistance is telling me.
