New to me '15 Sportage

Hi everybody,
Just purchased the Sportage last Saturday from a Hyundai dealership for my wife. We're replacing the 05 Stratus with 189K miles. We were so happy with our purchase! The Kia was missing the floor mats so I got online to see what I could find and saw Kia Forum. So I paid a visit to this forum, looked up 3rd gen Sportage and saw THAT thread, the engine failure club! Felt like I got punched in the gut. Anyway, I'm stuck with it now. I went through this with the Stratus 2.7 V6 and have never been stranded so hopefully this will be the same.

I went to and registered and found one "campaign" item. This is the KSDS campaign or whatever it's called. So can I assume this hasn't been done to my vehicle? Do I want it done? If it gets me the warranty for the engine maybe it's worth it? What percentage of these engines are failing?

I had to run through an engine failure scenario with the missus telling her to be careful when bailing out to not get run over!

Your input is greatly appreciated

I purchased a used one too with 35000 miles. All reviews were great when I was searching reliability on it. It wasn't until after I bought it did I see about the 2.4 engine. I had the kdsd done on it and immediately changed oil to Mobil one 5w20. Plan on using this oil and changing every three thousand using a Kia oem oil filter. Also run a bottle of techron every 3 thousand miles. I know it will not keep the intake valve clean, but will help injectors and help keep combustion chamber clean. Keep up on maintenance and check oil at least once a week you should be ok. I love this vehicle, hope it lasts a while. Hope yours does too! Best wishes with it.

This is my second Gen 3 Sportage. I had a 2012 LX (AWD) with the 2.4L MPI engine, and now have a 2014 SX (AWD) with the 2.0L TGDI. Both have been pretty good, had a tranfer case/ trans issue with the 2012 around 100k miles, replaced it and it was fine after that. Only reason that car got traded is because I found a SX (has a turbo). This one will stay. Change oil regularly, regular maintenance, blah, blah, and you'll be fine. Even my fiance has the 2018 Sportage and she loves it. It's a safe car with a turning circle of a fruit fly, fairly smooth ride, and lots of amenities as standard. I've had much worse luck with my Ford Ranger (transmission, suspension, fuel pressure regulator, electrical, etc), Ford Escape (transmission, front axle, front suspension) , Ford Mustang (A/C compressor shoots flames not intentionally, replaced engine after cracked block) & Chevy Malibu (replaced engine 2x... second one was bad luck though)

If I haven't found any metal flakes at 73k miles, 18psi boost, and with my right foot... your chances are exceptionally slim.

If not as you say, "Tuck and roll" on that bailout.

~ Bass Wagon ~ My installs are: 1) good quality, 2) cheap, 3) fast. Pick any two...

There have been enough failures for there to be a recall, but that still doesn't mean a high percentage will fail. You also have to remember about the engine failure thread here, people experience a failure, search the internet for a KIA forum, find this one, and post to that thread. The result is that a disproportionately high number of people on this forum seem to have failures when really it could be a very low percentage failure in real world.

My SX now has 96k miles. Only issue it's ever had was the climate control fan failing.
I change the oil approximately every 5k miles with 5w30 synthetic and things have been great.

Just keep up on the recalls with your dealer and keep good records of your oil changes and other maintenance and you should be fine.
I assume the campaign item you found is the programming of one of the computers? We just had that one done a couple weeks ago.

Thanks for the encouragement. You do hear all the bad on the internet. It's interesting that the Chrysler 2.7 had failure problems due to improperly prepped blocks resulting in blocked oil passages from aluminum flashing. Sounds like that may be a problem with the GDI. With the 2.7 I went from 5w-20 to 5w-30 synthetic blend, usually Valvoline, and haven't had a problem. The missus is enjoying it so far. It's a luxury vehicle compared to what we're used to!
A coworker says that modern engines are like little racing engines being all aluminum, dual variable overhead cams, high compression with electronic wizbang stuff to manage them and keep them from grenading. I like the 4.0 in my Cherokee and 5.9 Cummins in my truck. Brick simple engines and all cast iron.
