Welcome the newest member to the seized engine club

Although the recall might only be for the turbo engine, the problem is in more than just those engines. How do I know you ask? Three days ago was driving across state in my '13 Sportage EX 72k miles and it just died on me. Had it towed to Kia dealership. Diagnoses...... rod bearing failure and metal shavings in the oil pan. I've changed oil every 5K miles, not the factory recommendation of 7500. I bought the car certified pre-owned with 2k miles on it from KIA in 2013. KIA warranty didn't transfer since I wasn't the original owner, which is total BS considering is was certified pre-owned from the dealership with that mileage. Luckily, and I still don't remember paying for it, I had purchased an aftermarket 10yr/120k mile warranty through the dealership. So they get to foot the $7k bill of putting a new shortblock in the car. Of course those are on backorder due to the known widespread engine defect. So I get to wait a month before the dealership even gets a motor in.

You didn't give your location, so it's not clear if your Sportage has a 2.4L Theta MPI, or a different engine.

Any signs of trouble with the engine in the days prior to the failure?

How is this so "widespread" and nobody has heard of it?

2.0t engine here, almost 90,000 miles, and (knock on wood) the only hiccup was a wastegate issue that was quickly resolved. If they are running out of short blocks, I should see a lot fewer Sportages out there, but they are everywhere.

2012 Sportage SX AWD-Ceramic tint all around, debadged, K&N filter, custom catback exhaust, Torcon BOV, GT Yellow fog covers, interior LEDs, 55w HIDs, Falken Pro G4 A/S rubber, Brakestech cross drilled rotors/Akebono ProAct pads, H&R springs, KYB struts.

The "extended warranty" is how most dealerships do the certified pre-owned warranty. So they are taking care of it for you.

The EX has a 2.4l MPI engine manufactured in a different facility from the 2.0l GDI which is the facility affected by the engine debris issue. Sucks about the short blocks though. I have heard about the backorder on those for a while when I was doing research on the engine issue before I purchased my C.P.O. 14' Sportage SX.

good luck dude.

Except I paid for the extended warranty. Big difference in getting a factory warranty for free with purchase and having to fork over thousands of dollars in an "aftermarket" warranty.

Not exactly how you've come to the conclusion that "nobody has heard of it"? Kia had a class-action lawsuit against them and over a million cars recalled. Call any KIA dealership and as soon as you mention engine failure with those year models, they know exactly what you're talking about. The dealership I had mine towed to literally had 3 motors they were replacing and all took about a month to get the motor delivered because they were on backorder.

Location is NW Arkansas. No sign of trouble whatsoever. Literally just stopped running while doing 60 down the road.

It's not lawnmowers to oranges when there are tons of stories just like mine that do not involve the admitted motors by KIA. Same exact scenarios.... Driving along and car dies while going down the road....towed to dealer.... bearing failure with metal shavings in the oil tank. Just because KIA hasn't owned up to this particular motor doesn't mean there isn't an issue. I know of two people who have suffered from this and where not part of the recall.
