smart key intermittently not working...??

We have two of the intelligent smart keys for our SX+. My key has worked fine all along. My wife's key has worked fine until last week, at which point suddenly it's gone into periods where it intermittently doesn't work--the unlock/lock doesn't work, the liftgate button doesn't work, and the pushbutton ignition only works if she holds the key right up to the push button itself. But then the next time it'll work fine, the next day after that it'll work fine, etc....but then it doesn't work again.

Anyone know what this could be? I'm just dreading taking it in to the dealer, because every time I've ever asked them to look at something intermittent, they say "we can't fix something unless we can see it happen"--in other words, unless I get lucky and the key misbehaves when they test it (which is unlikely, as it works more often than it doesn't), they're just going to give it back to me and shrug.

I guess maybe...but it seems strange to me if it's the battery, bceause it seems to me that would make it just not work at all, wouldn't it?

If it is the battery, is that something I can replace myself?

Try page 4-16 of your manual on Smart Key battery replacement.

It is a 2032 battery and they usually have a life of 2+ years.

One of my two fobs j(brand new 2019) had a dead battery so I changed them both.

The owner's manual shows how to pop the key fob apart, it is important to do it right to avoid damage. Once open it exposes the switch contacts which are worth cleaning with a cloth and some alcohol or contact cleaner.

And of course the battery - you can get them overpriced at the drugstore or cheap on Amazon. It has a number on it so you can get the right one.

Did it totally quit, or was it intermittent?

I'll change the battery anyway, but it just seems odd that a dead battery would totally not work, then totally work for a week, then totally not work again, then work again for another few days.

I'm betting cleaning the contacts solves the problem.
Little carbon pads that get dirty.
Battery case / battery contact itself can have the same problem.

Fair enough, that makes sense. I'll give it a go.
