new Canada map available ($200 USD)

Just got an email announcing that the new MnSoft Kia Map Update is available, if anyone still uses this rather than Google Maps in Android Auto/Apple Carplay: https://www.kia-gpsmap.ca/?utm_sourc...eid=4bbfbf16b3

And yes, it's still $200 USD. Incredible.

And my friends still wonder why I have TomTom (with free map subscription) equipment in my Sorento with its nifty center console nav display... (sigh). What a rip.

Tom Tom just sent out an email that they are no longer offering future maps for lifetime subscribers for certain models (not that old). My wife uses one in her Odyssey and we will never buy another Tom Tom product due to them breaking their promise. There is a class action lawsuit as well.
The nav in my Sorento seems pretty good but I will not pay $200 or more to update it. There might not be any updates within 500 miles of me so why pay for it?

It isn't just a problem of age, it's more often memory availability. They have added so much new geometry to their maps that some of the smaller memory model units just can't handle the map size now.
Devices with Lifetime map subscriptions are not impacted by this policy. Scroll down for models >> https://www.tomtom.com/en_us/obsolete-products/#car My old GO 740TM (ca. 2008) with a Lifetime map subscription continues to receive updates. Which is yours?

That said, "not that old" is in the eye of the beholder. The most recently released products to be impacted by lack of new map offers are the GO 1005 (2010 release), START 20/25/40/45 (2011/2012 release), and EASE (2010 release) models. None of these are current generation devices -- those were initially released in 2014, and none of which are included in the EOL notification.

My old TomTom finally ran out its subscription. It was about 12 or 13 years old. The maps got to big for the memory. The fine print, as with all the TomTom models, says you get free updates as long as it is a supported model. It cost me just over $100, or about $0.75 per month. Money well spent. It was more accurate than the GPS in my new Cadillac.

200$ per year is a joke .... I paid to get the android auto / apple car play update, but i won't pay another 200$ to get some updates, it should be 200$ lifetime.

Is the software update portion that comes with the map update, locked to the specific head unit also, or is it unlocked?

We could pool resources and do group buys as new software versions come out.

Just bought a Garmin Drive 60 w/traffic and lifetime maps for $99. My last Garmin went 8 years before being obsolete so I'll stick with these standalone solutions before I'll start paying to have a nav system in the car. And it has both US and Canada maps and parts of Mexico.

2 cars and 2 Garmins with traffic and lifetime maps, using those for over 5 years now, maps are free and get updated every 3 months. What else can I say? Oh yeah, been to WY, UT and NV just a week ago, took my Garmin with me too.

Perhaps a naive question for those of you who use TomTom, Garmin, etc....why don't you just use Google Maps as part of Android Auto or Apple Carplay? Wouldn't that be simpler/cheaper/better, particularly in light of the fact you never have to worry about updates?
