It looks like this issue is starting to gain more attention in Canada. Looking forward to my loss of value compensation cheque but won't hold my breath waiting for one.

Hi, Karl with a K I have had my Sorrento 17 lx in the shop now for 2 and a half months. They said I need a new engine. Kia motors keeps telling me it's coming but subject to change each time that started on 3/22. I called my dealer yesterday to ask a few questions hung up looked at my email saw I had received one from kayla at kia motors stating that now my engine will not be in till 5/3. I called back to the dealer and to my disbelief they said great news we did a test and we think it's just the harness not the engine. Just doesn't seem right to me. Any insight would be great because if they do the test and the harness works and I finally get my car back I'm nervous the whole thing will happen again and was wondering what they if anything offered you if it were to happen again? Hope they fixed your car.

Garage

Finally called my local Kia dealer and asked them to check for any recalls, outstanding TSBs, Service Actions, Product Improvement Campaigns etc. on my car.
Nothing came up.

So I took it in to them and used it as a trade-in on a 2019 Sorento SX. No mention was made by the salesman or by me about the recall and Theta engine problems, just business as usual.
Although I have enjoyed the turbo engine a lot, and will miss its enthusiastic response to throttle input, I feel relieved that I'll now be driving a Lambda V6 which appears not to have the long history of problems associated with the 2.0.

Good plan. I traded mine in for more or less the same reason. Just for a different brand but also one with a V6.

Am I the only one who is not rushing to trade in my 2.0t Sorento? I still plan on keeping it for many years and I am sure the odds are in my favor that those will be trouble free years.
Majic24 and Coolwhip like this.

Two ways to look at it. One is that the theta engines appear to have a high likelihood of failure and you could have major issues during ownership... on the other hand KIA will most likely have a lifetime warranty or greatly extend the warranty on these engines if you want to keep it for a long time so you should be covered.

If it fails during the warranty period but how about those that fail outside of coverage? Is Kia replacing out of warranty motors for the same failure? Plus, our Canadian brothers don't have the benefit of 10/100 mile coverage, believe they are at 5/60 so much more likely to have fallen out of the factory coverage period. 168,000 motors and counting is enough to give anyone pause.

Kia says lifetime warranty if you get the software update...but like any warranty they may find a way to deny coverage.

I guess time will tell if you made the right decision. Some of us only keep our vehicles for 4-5 years. When you take into account that KIA's don't have the best resale value and add to the equation all of the negative publicity of the engine fires and the resale resale value goes even lower.

I chose to bale on mine while there was still some equity left in it.
