I start the car this morning fine, drove to work but when I turned off the engine the "key not in car" light came on and the ding started going. Next to that I couldn't lock the car by remote or button on the car and had to lock it with the built in key. The light on the fob is flashing still but it looks like it somehow disconnected from the car.

Is there a trick to get them talking?

IMO you cant start the engine without the key but once the engine has started it doesnt shut down if you then take the key fob out the vehicle and drive off without it. it is only when you shut the engine off later that you run into issues.

that said this morning i walked up to my car in a mall parking lot and hit the button on the door to open. no reaction. i looked at the mirrors and they were folded out so i hit the button again. no reaction. i had visions of what the OP explained going through my head and then a second later it dawned on me i was not standing next to my my own car - which was 5 spots away! If the owner happened to be around I'd probably be explaining things to a police officer 0:)

It took a while but it happened again the other day and I figured it out!

Leave your car in drive and shut off the car, then put it in park. Suddenly all electronics will get confused, can't lock with remote or button and it takes a few button presses to get it to start again, after that it's fine.

Very strange, will show the dealer sometimes!
