Unhappy Body Control Module

I have a 2016 Kia Sorento Limited with way too many miles on it (about 91k). A few days ago, I went to shift the car out of park, and it wouldn't move. I ended up using the shift override and inserted a screwdriver to shift it out of park.

I went to the dealership, and they diagnosed it as a body control module gone bad, and said it was about a $1000 (parts and labor) repair. However, from what I am reading, it doesn't appear the Body Control Module (BCM) controls the gear shift, and I am not having any other problems with the components that the BCM does control. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to if this sounds right, and if it does, can it be fixed without paying $700 bucks just for this one part? Is it difficult to remover and replace? Thanks.

I would take it to another dealership if you can. My read of the service manual tells me that the BCM is only related to the parking brake warning switch, but it shouldn't cause the parking brake to engage. Here's what it says:

"Parking Brake Start Warning - If the vehicle speed is over 5 km/h & parking brake switch ON & IGN ON, the parking brake waring sound is ON."

Since you weren't even moving, I'd say the BCM isn't your problem. But electronic systems can be weird, so it's still possible.

The exact same thing happened to me a few months ago. It started fine, but wouldn't allow me to shift out of park. I used a screwdriver to shift, but while I was driving, it seemed like I was only getting half of the power steering for some reason. I took it to the dealer the next day, but of course on my way there something happened and everything seemed to be working again. I dropped it off at the dealer and they called back a few hours later saying it was a defective immobilizer. They repaired it under warranty and it's been fine since.

Just to eliminate one thing...pull the shift-knob off (hold button down pull straight up (does take some force). Then re-insert firmly. car off and back on , then see if it works.

HELP! - Car wont shift out of Park - BCM??

HI - My 2016 Kia Sorento is also in the shop with the exact same problem - went to go to the grocery store (after driving the car all day with no problem) and it would not shift from P to R. I had to use a screwdriver to get my car out of P. I took my car to the KIA dealership and they have had it for over a week and still have no idea how to fix the problem. They have already replaced some (shifter?) part and now they are saying that it could be the BCM. They have cleaned all the "grounds" areas (not sure what that means - I no absolutely NOTHING when it comes to cars). I would really like to avoid having to pay over $1,000 for a new BCM and labor...any thoughts or suggestions? Also, is this a problem that another mechanic could fix, or is it something that requires an actual KIA mechanic? AND has anyone heard about an recalls involving this? We bout our 2016 Sorento brand new in September of 2016. The car has A LOT of miles (roughly 85,000), so is this something that could happen around that many miles? I am past my warranty period so I'm hoping I don't need to shell out over a grand for this... ANY and ALL advice/comments would be appreciated!

Yes. Apparently the GDS is not telling the KIA part hangers exactly what to do, so they are lost in space. Call around to the independent shops in your area, describe the problem, and then ask if they're interested in giving it a try. Close the one that sounds most interested in working on your vehicle.

I am having the same issue too with my 2016 Kia Sorento. It has only 61k miles and a failed engine that was replaced two months ago. I am hearing the same thing from the dealer even though apparently the BCM does not control shifting out of park. Not happy with that purchase. I really do not want to visit dealerships every other month .

I know that this may sound silly, but are your brake lights working properly? Granted, that only represents 1/2 of the brake switch assembly, but if they're not lighting, the other half probably isn't working, either -- and that can put you into this particular ditch.

Same problem

I have about 85,000 miles on my Sorento and I experienced this same exact problem.

They're telling me it's the BCM. The part will cost $684.97. With the added labor it'll be over $1,000.00

It seems to be working fine when I have a tweezer pushing down the shift override.

Anybody have any answers? Is it okay to still use the car with the tweezer until I find a new option?

Still wondering if anyone has checked to assure that their brake lights are operating normally. One side of the switch deals with the brake lights, but the other half inhibits shifting unless there's a foot on the brake that is engaging (or disengaging, actually) the switch. If it's set improperly in the bracket, you don't get out of Park.
