Engine Locked...Possible Recall Warranty

I am sharing my story with you all in hopes to receive some advice and hear about your experience so I am better prepared for what is to come next.

Monday I was driving down a major highway going about 70 when suddenly while merging towards my exit my car shut off. All the dashboard lights came on and I was no longer able to accelerate. By some miracle I maneuvered across 4 lanes to make it to the shoulder where I cruised towards my designated exit and pulled safely into the shoulder. I put the hazard lights on and tried to restart the car. Unsuccessfully it turned but did not start. I then noticed white smoke coming out of my hood. I thought my car was going to catch fire. I called the emergency line and roadside assistance came to see if it could be restarted. I was advised that I needed a tow. My local Kia dealership received my car and finally called me back today to tell me that my engine is locked. My vehicle fell under the recall that passed the original test. We now have to go through the next steps to see if they will in fact cover my new engine, otherwise my car is basically junk!

My 2013 Sorento has 120,000 miles and is a 4 cylinder. If anyone has any advice or suggestions going forward I would appreciate it. I am supposed to hear back from them tomorrow regarding what is next.

Wish me luck!

As long as oil maintenance was done reasonably well, there will be no luck required. A new engine is a done deal.

The timing belt was never changed. Why do you ask?

Update: A case with Kia has been started. Some kind of internal form is being sent to Corporate to get approval on my new engine. Meanwhile I am still in a rental vehicle since Monday. I was told that since I'm over 120,000 Kia will not pay for a rental vehicle. I have 120,095. That is BS. The Service Manager said I can call Corporate and complain to see if they will cover it.

I am still waiting on one more call back tomorrow with Kia's answer.

Stressful week for sure...

Do you have breakdown insurance? That may cover rental. I have it since I'm still making payments which I have to have full coverage until it's paid off.

Happy Friday! Kia dealership called me today to tell me that my engine replacement has been approved by corporate as well as my rental coverage. Kia will create an ARMS? ticket and Enterprise will refund my hold on my account and they will take over the direct bill. I am currently only require to pay a $50 third-party rental fee which I am perfectly happy to do after all of this!!!

Service Manager told me it could take anywhere from 1 week to months for the backordered engine! I could care less right now! My car is being fixed under the recall warranty and my rental is covered! Sitting in a 2019 Jeep Wrangler! So if I have to wait I might as well enjoy the Jeep with the top down this spring!

DefMan: I did not have breakdown coverage for rentals through my insurance. I did have roadside assistance that covered my tow at least.

Can't comment on WHY your engine froze without doing the analysis but I wonder about the condition of the rest of the car since I noted that you live in Indiana and it is a 6 year old car. I used to live in Michigan and after 6 years many cars were rust buckets or on their way due to the salted roads in winter. Even with undercoating the salt got into places where it shouldn't and the car would rust from the top down. I haven't lived in Michigan for 40+ years now and I know a lot has changed in the meantime so My concern may be unwarranted. Glad to read you're getting a new engine from the dealer. I bought a 2004 KIA Spectra for my daughter new, but the tranny failed after 12K miles. First time it happened Kia replaced the tranny but not with a new one, but with a rebuilt unit. The second and third time it happened KIA refused to help. The fourth time it happened we junked the car under CA's junker off the road program and got $1500 bucks for it. I had the satisfaction of watching a large backhoe crunch it up like a Cracker-Jack box. Later, I found out that the tranny was a FORD unit that even Ford had trouble with, but which had not stopped Ford from OEM'ing it to Mazda and KIA who both had trouble with it.
