Unhappy 2012 Kia Sorento CREAKING Noise

Hi all,

I've been battling this front end creaking noise on my sorento for over a year. I've replaced both complete strut assemblies along with new bushings with no luck. I recently replaced a bad passenger side ball joint. Still getting a creak sound (like two pieces of styrofoam sliding against each other), when turning hard to the right, under 10 mph. Me and my mechanic have checked almost everything, joints, bushings.... etc. I've read a lot about the steering column boot, or possible rack problems? Any input, or any updates would be awesome, thank you in advance.

-Chris

Everything underneath greased? Years ago I had a similar issue on a dodge pickup. It was play in the ball bearings. Don't know if the sorentos can get that same issue.

Does it do it with the vehicle off the ground (no load on suspension)?

If yes, it should be easy to replicate with one person moving the steering while the other listens.

If no, then you can still use the same technique, but load the lower control arm with a tall jack stand or similar.

Ya we tried loading the rear so fronts pushed down and turned 100 times.... tried loading each front side individually.... no luck. Been reading a lot about the steering column "booty" or rack problems, it's so annoying. It won't show itself when i have an extra hand to turn the wheel.

I had a problem that sounds similar to yours in 2016 while still under warranty. I took it into the dealer many times and they tried lubricating various items. In the end, it was fixed when the steering rack was replaced.

Mine is 2012 with 75k on it.... obviously past the 5yr 60k, did they actually warranty yours?

Anyone know how to really isolate and test the rack for noises... or bad seals on the inside?

Anyone know if this is a TSB? Bad rack?

They did replace it under warranty. There was no TSB-I just reported it...there may be a TSB, though. However, the time they actually fixed it, I went on a test drive with the mechanic and when he heard it and suggested the rack, if I remember correctly, he said it wasn't the first one he had replaced for this problem.

If you had reported it before your warranty ran out, you may be able to follow-up with Kia to continue to address it. That's what happened for another issue I had and Kia continued supporting me to address the other issue and it was eventually addressed.

Any idea how much that repair would be for the steering rack? I know sometimes even under warranty, they will show you the cost of the repair on the receipt. Would be nice to know what I'm dealing with before I take it in to have the dealer look at it.

If you have creaking at low speeds while turning like the OP, that sounds like a tie rod to me. You can look at the boots on those if you take the front undercover off, but typically they just need to be replaced. I don't know if these have grease fittings on them or not (I haven't looked too closely at mine).

Tie rods are about $20.

one1step1, I finally found the invoices and all warranty work that was done shows a $0.00 amount.

I would also say that you should definitely look at the tie rods as rejesterd suggested...especially as that would be much less expensive than replacing the steering rack.

However, in my case, the dealer service dept had a look at several items until one of the mechanics was on a test drive with me when the issue happened. The mechanic sounded like he knew the issue as soon as he heard it and mentioned that he had replaced the steering rack on more than one occasion.

Replacing the steering rack is probably not an inexpensive fix...not sure. Might be better to take it to a mechanic other than the dealer if you want a lower price.

I'm trying to remember what the noise was like and when it happened to me. I believe it happened with very slow speeds. I believe the steering wheel was usually at or near the extreme left or right and being turned slowly. It sounded like a creaking door as you were opening and closing it. It didn't happen all the time. I think it happened more often when the temperature was colder as in the morning or evening.

It's unfortunate I didn't record it. You should record it and post it to the forum.
