Thumbs down Transfer Case Problem for Sorento 2008

I have a Sorento 2008 (EX) with automatic transmission that never went off-road. At 6.000 kilometers noticed that the car made a cracking noise while going forward from full stop and while going backwards with the front wheels turned all the way. I took the car to the authorised service and after a week they told me that the problem was with the transfer case. They replaced the whole trasfer case. The car stopped making the noise. 2.000 kilometers after the replacement of the transfer case, the same noise came back again.I went to the same authorised service and asked the chief techician to look over the problem seriously.Ten days later he told me that the problem was again with the transfer case and that they were going to replace it again.Unfortunately when he send the order in for the transfer case, the company told him that we are not going to replace the transfer case again without opening it up and see what was the problem. And so he did.In the transfer case there are some discs that were totally worn off.I don't know how can this be when all the time that I was driving it was on AUTO 4WD. (My car has a button for 2 or AUTO).Two weekns have gone by since then and I am still waiting to get back my car. The technician told me that he was going to replace the discs with more reinforced ones.As far as I know these discs can not be worn out in a car with 12.000 kilometeres only. How come they have reinforced discs but those in the transfer case are not reinforced? I don't think that the problem is in the discs. Can any of you faced this problem?

sounds like you have TOD, it should not fail so soon even with bad driving habits (don't let them blaim YOU !)

sounds like an electronic problem or sensor problem within the TOD system (not all problems w/TOD will cause an error code or light flash)

all tires the same size and worn evenly ft to rear and side to side ?

TOD clutches only have a limited life expectincy, IMO less than the same dics in an auto trans

NO TOD for me

IMO Dextron III is not the best fluid to use (if that is what is spect), but if it is the spect fluid to use for warrenty your are stuck with using it

Thumbs down Never again Kia

Just another good reason I will not buy another Kia product. Surly Kia knows they have real problems but they keep making their customers jump through hoops getting their Sorento's repaired. And then they don't have the real fix and no idea how to fix it.

I agree. But is DexIII the spec? or is it RED1? like the transmission. First tranfer might have been bad but second might have gone south and worn disc's form DEXIII being where RED1 should have been. Or the reverse. But i did not see specs. But with some of these dealers you guys have, i wonder sometimes. That is starting to make way more sence here. But still not sure.
Either way I am glad i got a 04 with no TOD nor tranfercase. 2WD for me baby! Nice and simple!

I really don't feel this is a tramission fluid issue. DexIII is what just about everyone uses and it has never damaged a transmission that this poster has evey read of.
Many Mfgs. want you to use their own name of DexIII just to drag a little more money out of you. But in the end it's still the SAE DexIII your getting.
