The resonator is the plastic chamber which hangs down between the air flow meter and the runners .If you remove that you must bung up the hole or you will have lots of un metered air going into the system...The "filament thing " you refer to is I think the comb which straightens out the airflow for its passage over the air flow meter ..a bit like the entrance to a wind tunnel for areodynamic testing. This is part of the Bosch air flow meter and you might upset the settings though others have built Hot Air inlets which dispensed with the comb. No doubt someone else will comment.The air flow meter works with a heated wire which detects the amount of air going in ....more air cools it ..less air it gets hotter ..its change in resistance determines how much fuel is added....dont touch that or you will bugger the whole thing up !!

i have deleting intake resonator in my rio 02 . i found better throttle response and more accelerate ,no more sound or more gasoline ( MPG is under considering)

Word of caution, the air intake resonator may also separate any water drops that might find its way into the intake. If there is a small hole in the chamber at the bottom, that is a drain hole. I have not looked at my Sorento's but other cars I owned have this.
