Turn your radio on...

Need to vent some spleen.

I've owned my Oz 03 EX Sorento for 3 years from new. Within a few weeks of delivery the radio decided to cark it on the RHS channels. Took it back to dealer and they purred soothingly that it was a common problem with all Kias, low quality radio CD- easy fix (this is the single CD model, not the optional 6 stacker). After a few weeks when a radio became available (don't ask - it's the crappy parts situation in Australia) they replaced the radio. Few weeks later, problem returns - back to dealer who said they would order an upgrade model (still single CD). This was done, few weeks later, same deal. Won't bore you with full details but 6 radios later and about 9 dealer trips even I realise it's not the radio but a connection somewhere in the bowels of the dash. Contacted and complained to Kia Australia who were about as useful as a tissue paper umbrella.

In frustration one morning after it decided to die once more, I gave it a clip around the ears and connected with the binnacle over the radio. Radio works! Next time it died, I decked it again (ever so gently) - radio works - but it's dead boring driving along waiting for it to cut out then looking like a loon, whacking the dash! Anyway, reported all this to the dealer who finally decided through use of blinding logic that it was a loose connection or dry joint somewhere. Gutted the console and seemingly fixed the problem - until yesterday when the same ol' issue came back. At least it lasted nearly 2 months - whatever they did. Funny how such a small thing can sour your relationship with car and dealer. I wonder if anyone else out there in Sorento land has had similar audio problems? BTW, no dealer choice where I am!
Spleen vented, back to atmospheric pressure.

I've had a few issues with the audio. Aside from the fact that I can't believe that they don't come equipped with MP3 players now as standard, the first radio I had used to occasionally go off tune/station. The Kia service dept replaced it at service time, no quibbles as they said the Kia stereos were well known for their dodginess, so that was good.

But my new one is very picky with the CDs it chooses to play. I download (legally of course) music and burn to CD (at the highest possible quality settings) and every now and then, the CD player just refuses to play the CDs or plays them with so much hiss and noise that I can't listen to them, despite the fact that these CDs play perfectly well in my other audio equipment, and played perfectly well in the last CD player that was in the car. And interestingly, whilst I was waiting for my car to be serviced, another guy was in complaining that his stereo was willy-nilly deciding to switch itself from radio to CD (or vice versa, can;t remember which)!

But this is such a minor issue compared with my on-going steering problem that I can't be bothered to bring it up with the service dept.

Hi Guys - 2 things - firstly I got rid of the basic head unit in my Sorento and put in a cheap $200 Pioneer CD player with 4 x 50 watt amp built in. Had the installer look at the speakers and he said they were actually better than the Pioneers I was looking at buying. End result - awesome sound now - speakers good - head unit not - go for a Pioneer guys - big results available.

Secondly I am interested in the steering problem you mentioned. In the last 12 months mine has been off the road for 6 weeks with a problem in the right hand side steering - major contibutor being firstly parts have to come from Eastern States and secondly Kia packaged all Australian stocks of the required bearings wrong so had to wait until that was sorted out.

cheers

Well, today it's back in the shop and the service people had tears in their eyes when they saw me coming. They can't believe the radio is still an issue but fortunately (?) it was on the fritz when I drove in and they had the opportunity to hear first hand what the problem was (and how it could be corrected - temporarily). They said they considered having a whip around and buying me a decent radio - wish they had. Interestingly their comment is that the radios are not Kia originals but are supplied and fitted in Australia from a local supplier who is now being replaced by another company. True? Who knows, all I want is a radio that works reliably.

What was the Pioneer model number? Sounds like the way to go when my lease/warranty expires in a couple of months.

This saga is getting longer then Blue Hills! (for the Aussie readers of an age that can remember).
