Question Question about new tire speed ratings

One tire I had my eyes on is a Hankook RH03. It's highly rated in Consumer Reports and on other tire sites.

Thing is it has a speed rating of "S"...load rating is just fine at 106. Hankook confirmed that it is the correct load rating too.

Thing is, I get SO many conflicting statements about going from an H to S rating...some say "NO! don't do it", but the Goodyear, Michelin, and several other websites say speed rating DO NOT affect handling..it ONLY relates to the ability for the tire to withstand excess speeds for a certain amount of time.

KIA owners manual (and the KIA rep) says using and "S" and above should fit the bill just fine...just make sure load rating is good.

So what say you folks who are true Sorento owners? Do any of you use tires rated less than "H"? If so do you notice any handling problems?

I figured I'd ask folks who actually drive the same SUV as I to see what's up.

Thanks!
Alfer

i think i got an answer fer ya,.....
S rating is rated for up 180kph/113mph
H rating is the funky one,...it sits between U and V rating(dont ask me why, i wonder why also)
H is rated for 210kph/130mph

since yer in a kia an S tire will be just fine,...unless u got a really fast sorento,...H is only 3 grades higher than S,...not much,...at least not for an SUV

If you go over 180 KPH (is it possible?) with your Sorento don't put S rated tires.

Look at:

Not just a question of "IF", but "CAN" you go over (whatever) speed - ever (downhill, wind-assisted, whatever). I'm guessing Alfer is in the US driving a V6. I don't know about the US, but UK spec cars have a sticker on the door that gives the requirements for load and speed rating *minimums* - My V6 is H speed rated - as I recall are all Sorentos in UK.

Some driving diesels work on the principal that the car cannot go that fast, so a lower rating is OK. Some make the change AND notify their insurance, so they are covered from that angle. I don't know how they stand when it comes around to annual testing (UK MOT mandatory from 3 years of age). Put the original tires back for the test?

With the V6 the quoted top speed is (I believe) 118mph, although I thought I saw 119 quoted somewhere. I think the "T" rating is "up to 118mph". So the H rating is the "safe & correct" rating for a V6. I wanted to run AT tires. You cannot get H rated AT tires in 16" size as far as I am aware, so I went to 18", which are now available (Cayenne, Toureg, etc).

I'm happy, my insurer is happy and the vehicle is perfectly legal.

You pay your money and take your chance.

regards

My Sorento came with Hankook RA07s fitted as standard; they are H rated. They seem to be doing just fine, tread wear is low. All Sorentos coming into Cyprus have them fitted as standard.
